Nothing demonstrates the potential capabilities of humankind’s genius like the final movement of Lug Wig Van Beethoven’s IX symphony. Terrifyingly beautiful, Ode to Joy captures the human condition both in chorus and note. Since its completion and debut performance in 1824 it has been chosen time and time again to mark momentous occasions. Whether performed during the demolition of the Berlin Wall or announcing the opening of the Olympic Games it is without a doubt the most influential piece of music ever composed.
On a more personal level it is a source of inspiration. I have often tried to contemplate how a man who had gone entirely deaf could understand music so well that he need not hear it himself to compose it. Failing to fully comprehend what seems to be possible only through some metaphysical force, I at the very least accept it as an example of over coming impossible odds. That noted the fourth movement has often helped me to push myself to new limits. Anything from finishing a long run on the treadmill to relieving writers block during an essay, it has often acted as the anthem of my existence.

NYU: Why area of study intrigues you?
I never fully understood where my passion for foreign culture came from only that it seemed to present at a very young age. For years I sought to satisfy this curiosity through travel and literature. It seemed as if the world were may back yard and every nation my neighbor. After living and developing relationships abroad one cant help but to begin taking notice of international issues. Eventually my interests in these issues have matured into a fascination for foreign policy and global studies. In hopes of one day becoming a more active member in our international community I now seek to study these disciplines in a university setting.
Political science and global affairs as an academic concentration can help provide me with a better understanding of the intricacies involved in the interactions between our worlds nations. What can be done to increase foreign aid? What is our obligation as world super-power? Complex questions such as these are just fragments of which I am eager to discover. What better place to study our international society than New York City. Home to the United Nations and what easily might be considered the cultural capital of the world, New York provides an seemly endless education in foreign affairs.
