College admission help

Hi. I am a senior at Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy located in Forest park IL. at my High-school all courses are AP classes, since freshman year i have been taking AP classes because they are mandatory at my school (Advance Placement). Graduation requirements at my school are: 6 courses of Math=12 semesters, 5 courses of Science=10 semesters, 5 courses of language arts/social studies(ILASS), 2 foreign language, 2 electives, 1 year of a college course called research core and optional for graduation with distinction a class called mentorship.

With that being said:

I have a 2.2-2.3 GPA

I got a 18 on the ACT
-Taking SAT in october

 • when i goto college for 2011 fall i’m looking to go for science so i can become a Emergency Medicine Doctor, i love to help people and the community!

I have done a lot of volunteer work within my community:

-Volunteered for the chicago park district 4 summers straight
-Volunteered for The Greater Chicago Food depository, packing and distributing food to the homeless/needy for 2-3 years
-Volunteered at the Carol Robertson Center for kids with disabilities as an assistant for 2-3 years
-Volunteered for the Illinois sky youth program as a rec leader
-Volunteered in the community of Chicago as a helping hand to plant a garden

I have some awards as well:

I was nominated as JUNIOR CITIZEN OF CHICAGO by Mayor Daley and the Chicago Park District.
I have also been put into the National Society of Science Scholars

With all that being said I also have a rational reason why my GPA and ACT may have been down because freshman year doctors told my mom she had breast cancer and they said it was in control but junior year they told my mom it was spreading so they told her she wont live to see next fall which is fall of 2010 so she decided to change doctors and they ran so many test on my mom they found out she did not have cancer at all and that the doctors at Loyola misdiagnosed her. this was during all the time of my freshman to junior year with a great toll of stress on me so if there is a way for me to make this like a reason why my gpa is in suffrage please help me so i can somehow put it into a essay somehow, so it could help me win admission to the number 1 college on my list: Manhattan College .

The colleges I am trying to apply to are:

Manhattan college
St. Johns University NY
DePaul
University of Illinois at Chicago
Ohio State
Michigan State
Morehouse
Xavier new orleans
Howard University
St. Joseph college Saint Louis University

Do you all think i can get in? help i need advice please.

I can comment on Mich State. With that GPA and ACT you’re extremely unlikely to be accepted. Even for instate residents, that wouldn’t be a viable combination. I’m sorry.

Have you spoken with your guidance counselor? How will you finance your education?

On your own, you should research something called the Common Data Set – this lays out general acceptance rates based on scores and GPA. Therefore you can roughly see where you stand at each school’s level of selectivity. Best of luck to you.
