Im applying for UNC Chapel Hill on the Common App. Here is the short answer prompt:

“Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences in the space below (1000 character maximum).”

I have a question on this first. My main extracurricular I have done is volunteer at a Sunday School. I have done it for three years and would have a lot of good stuff to say in my essay about it. However, would it be smart to write about it, because Sunday School deals with religion? I’m really not sure if I should or not.

I also have a question on the personal essay:

“Please write an essay (250-500 words) on a topic of your choice or on one of the options listed below. This personal essay helps us to become acquainted with you as a person and student, apart from courses, grades, test scores, and other objective data. It will also demonstrate your ability to organize your thoughts and express yourself.”

I have narrowed it down to two prompts:

"Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence. "

-In this I would write about my brother, who is constantly on my back when it comes to school. He always forced me to push myself in school. He wanted me to be better than he was in high school. If I got a 90% on a test, he would tell me to take it again to get a 100%. If I would relax a bit, he would remind me of what my ultimate goal was.I would write about how he made me the hard worker (and other attributes) I am today.

"A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you. "

-In this, I would write about my high school soccer team. I played for three years now. On my team, we had people of many different races, including myself; Caucassion, African-American, Peruvian, El Salvadorian, Coloumbian, Mexican, Ghanian (?), Congoian (?), Middle Eastern, Brazilian, and others as well. I would describe how diverse our team was and how even though we were are drastically different from each other, ethnicity wise, we became one tight knit family. How in the huddle before gamedays, we would have a prayer in Spanish. How we would have music from all different countries playing during pregame warmups. I will write what I learned from being a part of such a diverse group of people.

Let me know what you think of these, it would be greatly appriciated!
Thanks!
