College admissions

I am currently a Junior in Dubai.

My stats aren’t that great IB score 35 SAT’s 1500 SAT Subject (Bio - 750, Chem - 700)

Extracurriculars
Worked at three different hospitals since my 9th grade and I will be working at one more this summer.
I was a production manager and costume designer for school plays.
I passed grade three in keyboard at trinity college
Learnt Dancing since 10 years

I will be applying in November 2013 for pre-med program. And these are the universities I was looking at:
University of Massachusetts
University of Michigan
University of Rochester
Eckerd College
Grinnel college

Do I really have a shot? Should I give ACT’s?

I posted this in another thread as well. I am currently a Junior in Dubai.

Your IB predicted score of 35, is it out of 42 or out of 45? And your 1500 is it out of 1600 or out of 2400? Your Subject tests are solid, but you really need an average of 6 on each IB subject and at least a 2000 (out of 2400) to have a reasonable chance at Michigan.

1500 Combined total or CR+M ?

What is your GPA? Michigan seems to put GPA as a more important factor than test scores. Remember that grades and test scores are only one part of the application. Their essay required some time to convey why you want to attend their school.

PsychoDad, the IB does not have a GPA. But a 35 out of 42 would be the equivalent of a 3.7 GPA taking a bunch of APs. However, I am not sure if the OP’s 35 is out of 42 or 45. If it is out of 45, then the OP’s GPA is more like a 3.4 or 3.5.

I have a 35 out of 42. They are not my predicted scores. They’re on my transcript. My SAT 1 is 1500 with the writing.

Would they consider it if my SAT 2 is good but my SAT 1 is not?

And also would my extracurriculars count since I want to do pre-med and I have worked in three hospitals with hands on training?

Ok, 35 out of 42 is within the acceptable range. Your SAT is too low though. Michigan does not really look at the SAT II. They will consider them, but it weights much less than the SAT. You really need over a 1300 on the CR+M.

ECs obviously count, but they will not make up for your low-ish IB predictions and your low SAT. Try to raise your predicted score to 37 and your SAT to 2000.

Alright. Do you think it’s better to give ACT’s or SAT’s? Because ACT’s seem easier to score.

Even good scores on SAT 2 doesn’t make up for SAT 1?

If you do better on the ACT than on the SAT, submit that ACT. Universities respect both equally. A 29 or 30 would be considered acceptable to Michigan.

And yes, even a pair of 800s on the SAT II would not make up for a poor score on the ACT or SAT.

Assuming I get the required scores, when is the best time to apply for Michigan? Some people say applying in November gives you the best results and financial aid. Is it true?

The best time to apply is before November 1. By then, you need to have all your documents at the University. If you are an international student, you will not be eligible for financial aid.

Okay thanks a ton!

Your test scores must be received by Michigan admissions before Nov 1 to be counted for Early Action. Once you are counted as an EA applicant, Michigan will consider your Nov test score if it is better. Michigan has made this specifically clear in its FAQ.

Thanks ! And sorry for the late response
