College application common app

Hi

Does any one know if the Philly schools below take the common app for application or we have pay seperately. which subjects are these colleges mostly strong for. Thanks in advance

Carnegie mellon
Penn state
Drexel.

Carnegie Mellon and Penn State aren’t in Philadelphia.

All are on the common app, but each has a separate application fee

I meant PA no Philadelphia

Many majors. You might want to research these schools through their website and other online resources.

They are also all very different:
CMU: small, private
Penn State: large, public flagship
Drexel: midsized private with co-op education

I know they have many majors just like any other university.Any college website will show a great advertisement about their courses.
The question was asked to get some feedback from parents or knowledgeable people

That’s not what I said - I said each of these schools is strong in multiple majors. For example CMU is strong not only in Computer Science, but also in Engineering, Fine Arts and Business. Similarly, Penn State has multiple areas of strength. Now, if you’re asking about relative strength/reputation in a major, then that opens up a whole new discussion.

It might be easier to mention your areas of interest and then posters can weigh in on how strong they think these schools are in those majors.

The interest is in medical science field not engineering or computer science .

Are you/your student an international student?

In the US, medicine is not an undergraduate field of study. Students can pursue almost any major, while on a pre-med track.

Tagging @WayOutWestMom, our resident expert. It’ll be important to know if you’re international.

I agree with everything DadofJerseygirl has posted.

For a premed student looking at PA schools, I would add Pitt to the list.

Does this mean this student wants to become a doctor?

Are you a U.S. citizen? If not, where do you hold citizenship?

Medical school in the US is a post-graduate entry program that is applied for after the completion of a baccalaureate degree.

Pre- med is not any particular major; it’s merely the intention to apply to med school upon graduation from undergrad. A pre-med can major in any field and still be eligible for medical school so long as the student has completed a list of required classes.

All of the schools you list offer the necessary coursework for pre-med.

What specifically do you want to know about each of these schools?
I earned a grad degree at Drexel. It’s mid-size private university located in fairly nice area of Philadelphia. The campus is definitely in an urban area with some no-so-nice areas not far from campus. Drexel offers many different degrees, but is especially known for its business program and its engineering school. Drexel has a very strong co-op program that allows students to get real world job experience within their major. (Though NOT in medicine since that is not an undergraduate major.)

Drexel University does have an affiliated medical school: Drexel University College of Medicine. But the medical school is completely separate from the undergraduate university. The undergrad and medical school do not share a campus and are not located particularly close to one another.

Are you a US citizen or green card holder? If not, it’s very difficult for international students to gain an admission to any US medical schools. Few med schools will accept international students. (Drexel COM does not accept international students.) And all international students are expected to pay 100% of the costs for their medical educations.

Not internation, US citizen

yes correct, doctor or research field in biology

Are you interested in receiving additional suggestions for schools that might be a good fit for your daughter/son?
Or (as per your original ask) do you just want to know if the 3 schools you mentioned are good for bio/pre-med?

If the former, I suggest starting a new thread, selecting the “chance me/match me” category and filling out the template. That will help posters provide appropriate suggestions.

Are you a U.S. citizen, and if not, where do you think your student will attend medical school and practice medicine.

Your student can take the required courses for medical school applicants at just about every four year college in this country, arts conservatories excluded.

Since we know absolutely nothing about your student, we really can’t even offer guesses as to where they would be a successful applicant for undergrad school.

I will say, at this point, your student’s goal is to get accepted to an affordable college they like. Put medical school or any other graduate degrees on the back burner for now. Your student could easily change their mind.

Even if you are using the common application, you will need to pay to submit to EACH college…unless you qualify for a fee waiver.

Yes I like to receive additional information about colleges in VA,NY,NC for studies in biology that help prepare for her MCAT

Colleges don’t prepare you to take the MCAT. They offer courses that address the content of the MCAT, but the actual MCAT preparation is on the student…not the college. @WayOutWestMom

Any four year university in any of these states offers a major in Biology.

Can you afford a four year private college? Are you eligible for need based aid?

Where do you have instate status for tuition purposes? Are the public universities in your home state affordable? Start there.

There are literally hundreds of colleges in these three states. If you really want help, you need to give more info. Has this kid taken the SAT or ACT and if not, why not. Do they want urban/rural/suburban. What about size of the college? Secular vs religious affiliation.

And how much can you pay per year for undergrad school?

As I suggested above, please create a new thread, select the “chance me / match me” category, and fill out all the details there. That will help us help you.
