College Application Essays

Hello,

I’m applying to double-degree programs. Does it make sense to write my college application essay (the common application essay) about an experience that made me want to become a musician ?

I don’t see why not, as long as it really contains your “voice.” My son’s essay was about his long-time music teacher and how the expereience with him formed him through the years. It worked out well for him. The essay gives you a chance to tell the admissions committee a little more about who you are. Go for it!

My son’s apps required multiple essays (all were double admits at conservatory/university programs where both academic and audition criteria be met, plus he was a dual major performance/music ed candidate). I remember seven essays for the three schools, and every one of them involved music.

Just make sure that the essay addresses the topic, a point a lot applicants seem to miss.

As SJTH says, it’s a great way to have them see “what makes you tick”.
