College average GPA question

I saw this data about average GPA at Notre Dame

avg. GPA for all 4 years is about 3.3~3.4

this is percentage of
undergraduate course in which half or more students received an A or A-
(Univ. wide)

61.5 ~ 68.8%

is this high compared to other colleges?

Yeah, I think so. I was thinking of attending UMich and the average freshman GPA is like a 3.1. I don’t think the average GPA for all for years is much higher either. It’s not grade deflated or grade-inflated. It’s just a normal curve I guess(which means I’ll be working my ass off for a B average).

It’s pretty high.

Where did you find this data? Is it on a public website?

As far as whether the figures are high, I would certainly say so.

I’ve seen things posted where the avg of the Ivy League schools ranges from 3.3 to 3.5 depending on the school; and think Brown was the highest at 3.47. So, I would say Notre Dame is in that range, although student academic quality at every Ivy, on average, is better than at Notre dame, so probably should merit a higher GPA. The only other frame of reference I have is I know when I was at Colgate the avg GPA was 2.92, but I’ve seen more recently that it has drifted to 3.15.

average GPA at Wake Forest is below a 3.0 stilll, also ive heard their freshman GPA is a 2.6

thats a pretty high average gpa. Looks to me like the grades are deflated. Or lame-o curve

A high average GPA would correspond to inflated grades, not deflated grades.

sorry whoops. Thats what i meant to say

It’s about what you’d expect from an elite college. Practically all Top 20 schools (w/o possible exceptions of MIT and Cal Tech) have average GPA’s of around 3.2-3.5. Since they have a higher caliber of students, they need to inflate their grades in order to calibrate them with the grades given by state schools. If Harvard were as grade deflated as Wake Forest, a 4.0 from Wake Forest would be equal to a 2.8 from Harvard (hypothetical). Grade inflation makes a 3.5 GPA from a top school at least somewhat equivalent to a 3.5 GPA from a state school.
