I’m looking into dorm bedding ideas for my S who will start college next fall. I’ve heard of some products called beddy or zipit that combine the sheets and comforter into one. Apparently, it makes it easier to make up and wash. Has anyone ever used these or similar products for college kids? Any other suggestions?
Most kids do just fine with a set of sheets (usually twin XL) and a separate comforter. No need to make it complicated…
Thanks for your quick reply. Funny, I was going for easier.
Wow, you are organized!
Not really compmom. Actually, I just had a bad case of insomnia due to foolishly drinking coffee late in the day.
Also…wait until you actually KNOW where your son will be living. Some dorms have XL twin beds…but others don’t.
I agree with others…sheet and comforter. It couldn’t get any easier than that!
And remember…some dorm washing machines won’t be large enough to accommodate the comforter…so having it hooked to the sheet might not be such a good idea!
I’m pretty sure my son didn’t wash his bedding very frequently, if at all. I purchased him a comforter with a “masculine” gray/brown color combination, that was designed not to show dirt.
I did the same thing gray/tan duvet cover…plus gray fitted sheets and pillowcases…most of those dorm washers are filthy and turn everything s dingy gray anyway.

debthereb, maybe you need some comfy bedding yourself!
I don’t want to even think about my son’s sheets. I think they were a toxic waste site. My daughter bleached hers every week with a Q tip then washed. No gender stereotypes here
I got my nephew a really soft, quilted (out of t-shirt material) black-and-grey striped comforter and sham from Target. It was economical and he loved it and it won’t show much in case he doesn’t wash it often. Also, I bought him the t-shirt material jersey sheets in charcoal grey.
I wouldn’t suggest the combo sheet/comforter set because comforters tend to get washed less often than sheets and you don’t want to discourage sheet washing.
I also bought my nephew a foam mattress topper and a mattress pad. He says his bed is very comfortable so I guess I did ok.
I spent much more on my daughter for an alternative down comforter and duvet cover and she complains the comforter slips around in the duvet.
For the most part boys do not care about bedding. My son had a throw on top of his comforter set and I bet he pulled his covers back less than 20 times for the year. I would not overthink this for boys.
LOL…I have to agree. While my D spent forever dragging me to more stores than you can imagine (texting and sending pictures to her freshman roommate at every stop) to find the exact right quilt and sheets for her dorm my S simply told me to get something navy blue (he wanted a dark color and likes blue) and we ordered the comforter and sheets online.
And if you don’t think your S will pull the comforter up chances are he won’t zip it up either!
@debthereb If they are too lazy to lift a comforter, they are not going to zip a zippy. As a minimum a fitted sheet and comforter. And they might be embarrassed to have a zippy if they had company. Also, don’t look like you can bleach it and it takes up more space in the wash.
1 out of my 3 boys would make the bed on his own accord. The youngest, 13, selects and irons his own clothes the night before school. He might be a little metro though.
I would wait until college acceptances have been received…and then ask your son what he wants. My son took the comforter off of his bed. It was what he wanted to do. He wanted a certain kind of sheet…whichnwe haooened to have from years of summer camp.
My son DID care what his room looked like…and he also washed his sheets.
Uh Oh… I purchased white sheets and a white comforter cover with navy blue stripe border (Hotel type style). Should I expect it to come back gray?
Lol yes. Even for girls white is a risky move. In most dorm rooms, beds are the only place to sit so also function as a sofa for residents and guests. I suppose white can be bleached but I wouldn’t expect that to happen very often.
After our D was offered admission, she accepted, and we knew what size bed her college’s dorm rooms had, we went to our local Bed, Bath, and Beyond to look over bedding options, then ordered the appropriate bedding (sheets and blankets) for pick-up at the Bed, Bath, and Beyond closest to her college. Two sets of sheets were enough. Her college’s dorms have central air conditioning and heating, so thick comforters weren’t really necessary, especially with limited storage space in the dorm rooms.
For sheets, you’ll need to see what size bed he has. Also, depending on the school and whether or not they have air conditioned dorms, he may want a lightweight blanket for when it’s too hot for the comforter. I recently moved D in for her freshman year and she only had the option of a standard size mattress (not the extra long). It will get quite cold there in the winter but it was hot when we moved in with no AC. So, her lightweight throws are good for this time of year.
Thanks gearmom, the embarrassment factor is what I was trying to figure out. I kinda was leaning that way.
But I also know that the college he is shooting for (and should have no problem getting in) primarily has lofted beds. I know those can be a pain to make. Plus my S is an Eagle Scout and spends lots of time in sleeping bags. Those two things got me thinking about the zip up bedding. But I now think you all are right. Besides, I mentioned it to him today and judging by his reaction, I kinda gathered he would probably would just prefer normal bedding.
@debthereb I almost suggested sleeping bag. I have two Eagle Scouts myself and the third in his way. The middle guy is a typical boy. He would be mortified to have anything different. I might even skip the flat sheet if it is a loft unless he’s actually going to make the bed. The flat sheet usually ends up mashed at the bottom of the bed or falling off.
