Here is my senario:

I have been given “X” amount of dollars for my education which can be spread throughout undergrad, grad, and law school. It’s not a huge sum, but it will certainly take a lot of the burden off of me.

My question is what would be the best way to invest this money? Would it be better for me to go to a cheaper tier three school so that I still have funds left over. My goal would be to work up to a law school like George Washington, Boston College, Georgetown, etc. and the less loans I have to take out the better. Otherwise, would it be better for me to go to a more well known school for undergrad (using up all of my funds), in hopes I would have greater chances at being accepted to a better law school, which in turn would provide more career opportunities?

Any input would be helpful.

The most important determinants of where you get into law school will be your undergraduate GPA and LSAT scores. Where you do your undergraduate studies will be of (at best) secondary importance; some would argue of little or no importance. On the other hand, how well you do in law school might well depend in part on the strength and quality of your undergraduate education. You should also consider the possibility that your career goals might change. Most undergraduates change majors at least once. Choosing an undergraduate institution solely on the basis of what it means for getting into and succeeding in law school is probably not a sound approach, because you might decide to do something completely different. I’m not quite sure what you mean by “tier three” schools, but I think there are advantages to going to a strong and well-rounded school for your undergraduate education. That could, however, be your state flagship if you wish to save money for a graduate or professional program.

What are your stats? If they’re good enough, then you won’t have to go to a Tier 3, you can get merit at a good mid-tier.

Are you a likely NMSF?

Will you be going to grad school AND law school???

What is your total school budget?

Stats: 3.4 GPA (unweighted)
All honors, AP, and Dual-College core classes
4 years of a foreign language
Only 3-4 EC’s
around 1200 on Reading and Math sections of SAT (will be retaking)
total budget around $50,000 everything else will have to come from my pocket.

I plan on getting a bachelors, a masters, and then going to law school.

*total budget around $50,000 everything else will have to come from my pocket.

You can’t borrow much. You’re limited to the following amounts…

frosh 5500
soph 6500
jr 7500
sr 7500

Are you saying that you have about $12,500 per year from your family?

What state are you in?

Why are you going to get a masters before law school??

Will you have to borrow for law school as well? If so, then you need to minimize undergrad debt.
