College Books - Where Did They Go?

When D1 graduated from high school five years ago, the upper school awards ceremony held each spring included awarding several juniors a “book” from a prestigous college. I believe the books were provided by the alumni associations of those colleges, and possibly the high school teachers helped select the appropriate recipients in the junior class. It seemed like the purpose was to encourage the kids who were awarded books to apply to and consider attending that specific college, although it certainly did not include any promise of admission.

Fast forward to this year, there were no books handed out at D2’s upper school award ceremony. Are the books still given out at other high schools, or has this practice dwindled in other places as well?

Never heard of that. Hm.

I’m pretty sure the Yale Book Award is still given out at many high schools. My son was awarded one from another university when he graduated four years ago, but I"m blanking on which one.

I remember Yale, and at least one of the women’s colleges (Wellsley? Smith?) from five years ago. But nada this year.

Is this a private HS? Never heard anything like it for our local public HS.

Private, independent school. About 60-70 kids per graduating class. All are admitted to 4 year colleges, typically 3 or 4 a year go to an Ivy league school (so private, but not super high powered).

Our public high school has book awards for a bunch of colleges, Harvard, and Cornell that I remember, but others too. I think it’s really just a matter of how active the local alumni club is. It’s possible whoever was in charge of the committee was busy and the effort never got off the ground.

We’re a big comprehensive high school as much urban as suburban.

Our public school has these book prizes, but the principal made a point of telling us that the college name associated with the prize had nothing to do with the prize itself.

Our public high school has these book awards, but they apparently don’t mean much for admissions … and it’s not at all an indication that the sponsoring school has any interest in the winner.

None of those prizes here, though I’ve heard of the concept.

Our public high school has these book awards, also.

Echoing what fendrock and stradmom said: we are told that the schools have nothing to do with the awards and they are not an indication that the school has any interest in the winner.

In addition to the ones mentioned above, our high school also has the Dartmouth Book Award.

Our public high school has them for several colleges
