College Chances/Advice

I need help finding a college that fits me. I will be a junior next year.

Preferably a warm climate (on the coast is a plus)
Has a good reputation
Preferably in the suburbs/smaller city (doesn’t matter too much)
Lots of activity on-campus (not just off-campus parties)

3.6 or 3.7 GPA (weighted)
28-31 ACT
Japan summer homestay with AFS
8 AP/Honors courses (Bio SAT II-690 AP World-5)
U.S. Foreign Policy summer course at American University
Global Business summer course at Pace University
China travel program with school
Swim team (not varsity yet)
Thinking of founding a Libertarian political club next year
Snow Shoveling for Seniors community service

Top 100 High School in the nation
White
Jewish
Father has Brown, Stanford, Columbia, and Harvard affiliations
From Massachusetts

Right now I’m thinking:
UC Santa Barbara
UC San Diego
U Virginia
Washington & Lee
USC
Furman
Rice
U Miami

What are my chances at any of these places, and any other suggestions?

Thanks! :)

for the UC’s it def depends on whether you live in Cali.
but i think that you could get into Furman and UMiami very easily (although they dont really have that good reputations [unless you’re doing med at Miami])
Rice, W&L, and UVA might be reaches for you, but all have very good reputation
Rice i particular is a spectacular school, but in your list is the most competitive school

I would definitely also recommend Swarthmore, which may be pretty hard to get in for you, but fits all of your preferences (except for the warm climate + coast) and is suchhhh a fun environment

good luck!

Massachusetts, btw

The more I look at Furman the more it seems like it’s really good for me.

Opinions?

I wouldn’t say that you will get into UM “very easily” as Oprah suggested, especially if your ACT turns out to be on the lower end of your range. UM’s average weighted GPA is around a 4.2, but since you go to a good HS, they may be more lenient with it. It definitely does seem to fit everything you’re looking for in a school! Good luck!

If you like Furman, you should look at College of Charleston too. I’m going there next year =) of course I’m from SC though, but it’s an AWESOME school, good rep, on the 10 year plan to becoming an IVY LEAGUE, it’s definitly been about 5 though =)… and it has a great HONORS SCHOOL program. Consider it… Charleston is a really great place to live and really close to the beach.

Have you checked out University of Flordia yet? That might be a good match–college town near the coast, good rep. Davidson in South Carolina, also.

We don’t have a Davidson in SC… lol

Davidson is in NC

Yeah, Davidson is in NC and UF isn’t exactly near the coast either.

Lol, don’t worry. Being on the coast doesn’t matter really as long as it’s a good school.

More opinions, please!

Agree w/ the others. Rice, UVA, USC, and UCSD are all unlikely b/c of the GPA. All the others are definitely within your reach. I’d recommend UMass and Boston U if you’re willing to stay in MA and are okay with the atmosphere they offer.

Thank you very much njaznpremed. I was thinking similarly.

one more bump
