I’m planning on Applying to either Harvard, Brown or Princeton early. Applying as well to Johns Hopkins, UPenn, U Chicago and U Michigan. Thoughts on my chances?
Your stats seem pretty solid. The only thing I would worry about is your list of ECs because it seems a bit on the light side. As for anyone, all the schools you have listed are reaches, unless you are in-state for Mich. Depending on what major you are applying as. the difficulty of getting into these schools varies, but all of them are selective. You have provided very limited info, but you seem like a competitive applicant to all of these schools. GL w your apps!
I would list HYPS as high reaches; the ECs don’t back up an above average stats application. Your SAT score is good, but many of the schools you are applying to are getting many OOS students with those stats. UChicago and UPenn are even bigger reaches considering they would be RD. What state are you from? Honestly, if you are not instate for any of those schools, I would honestly be concerned that you run the risk of not getting into any of them. Hopkins and UM would be the most realistic, as would maybe Brown early. However, especially if UM is OOS for you, I would advise you add some match and safety schools to your list. Even just the state flagship for you would be good, along with a couple schools in the tier below what you listed right now. Those are all schools with lower than 30% admit rates, with many in the teens and lower and the ones near 30% inflated by instate acceptances. I would hate to see you get rejected by all of those schools and end up at a community college or something with your stats. Please, do yourself a favor and add some more realistic schools to your list.
Agree with @DJCURRYBEATS19 . You need a couple of safeties, especially if UMich is OOS. I’d also think hard about where you decide to ED. Both Princeton & Harvard have SCEA - it’s non-binding, but you can’t apply anywhere else ED. The odds are also extremely long. Legacies, athletes & others with a hook fill many of the spots. Brown does offer ED. Probably better chance there - IF you can afford it. ED is binding. UChicago offers EA, ED1 & ED2. If whatever you pick for first choice doesn’t pan out in mid-December, ED2 has a January 2 deadline. You can apply EA to UMich - many who are applying to top schools also apply EA to UMich and UVA as “back-up.” Of course, both of these schools are also reaches for most unless in-state. So think long & hard about where to ED, but most importantly identify 2 - 3 safeties. Good luck. You do have strong stats…
That was my first thought also when reading the original post. Also, run the NPCs unless you are fine with being full pay.
Your list of ECs is short. However, if you are captain and MVP on a varsity team that you founded, then that does show a significant commitment over time to something that you care about.
To me it looks like you have a chance at the more selective schools, and like if you also apply to some solid safeties then you are going to do well wherever you end up.
The worst thing about college applications is not getting rejected. It’s getting accepted to a bunch of schools you can’t afford. If you can’t afford to pay, your acceptance list is useless. Private schools vary widely on how much financial aid they offer, so you can’t depend on being able to pay for it. Most parents I know aren’t going to pay $150k for a bachelors even of they do have a lot of money. OOS public schools are well known for being stingy to nonresidents. These are all reach schools, if not a statistical reach, they’re a financial reach. I recommend adding some affordable target/safety schools.
