Do you guys have a lot of GEN ED requirements? My school has like ten categories of them. Fortunately, I will have them all satisfied when I transfer after next year, so I will only have to focus on my major classes.

I have 58 hours of transfer credit from AP and dual enrollment. I still have to take two seminars, a social science class, a class that satisfies their “global diversity” requirement, two physical education classes, and (for my major) three physics classes and a chemistry class.

My school doesn’t let freshmen register for classes until November 21. :|

I know the struggle! I schedule on November 18th.

I have no idea what my grades are like in my humanities classes; I should probably ask. But I’ve had a rough semester and had to pass/no pass my STEM classes which sucks big time. This is why I don’t think I should go home. Most people would be happy for a month long winter break; I am frustrated.

Next year I want to live by myself but it’s expensive. But like dorm life actually sucks and is not really helping how this semester is going.

My English professor is lax on everything - it can get frustrating at times because you almost lose motivation to try. There’s no attendance policy, so some students show up only about 20% of the time. Our grade is composed of three essays (each 30%) and our daily homework assignments (ungraded - “Good”/“Not So Good”) which is 10%. Our professor told us that he just wants to hear our ideas - that he is fascinated about what the younger generation has to say about things like racism and gender - so long as we ground/support our ideas partially to the articles we’ve read in class.

My school has a TON of general ed requirements - especially for liberal arts majors; the idea being that liberal arts majors usually only require 9-10 classes (so around 27-30 credit hours) with fewer prereqs so they have more room to tackle a longer list of general eds in order to reach the necessary 120 credits. I came in with 30 AP credits and 3 credits from Dual Enrollment (one class, lol.) – A lot of my classes, however, tackle general eds and other requirements as well (AP Government, for instance, is Pol Sci 101 - a class for my major, a general ed requirement, and a “diversity” requirement). I’ll be finished with my general eds by next semester - I had to take two World Culture classes and Calculus.

Honors students at my school get senior standing/privilege in registering - so we register right when the window opens, while other Freshman have to wait until late November (unsure of the exact date). I am incredibly thankful for it - because otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to get into literally the only decent Calc section next semester.

I’m spending my winter break rewatching Khan/MIT videos on Calculus I in preparation for the Spring.

My school has a decent number of general education requirements, but I’ve managed to waive most of them using AP credits. I have 60 quarter credits and this gives me sophomore status, which is great for choosing classes. I register on the 18th, which is still super late, but a lot better than the other freshmen who get the last pick (and often need these classes the most as prereqs).

The school I’ll be transferring to next year has stringent humanities distribution requirements that don’t accept AP credit, so that’s what I’ll be taking in upcoming quarters to get them out of the way. I’m actually pretty excited because my current schedule is really STEM-heavy and I’m a bit tired of crunching numbers all day, haha.

This is a good idea. I should do this.

My spring schedule is almost exclusively classes I took in high school (Macro, Micro, Calc I), so it’ll be a bit…light. I’m also taking a political philosophy class, and mock trial on top of that for 17 credits. Should be fun.

I don’t register until November 25th though :(

Jeez it’s been a while since I’ve been on CC. It’s nearly the end of the semester, and I think I last posted before I’d even moved in!
My registration date is November 19. I’m most worried about the section I need for Stats filling up; there are two sections but the other is as the same time as a required class for my major that’s offered on a really inconsistent basis. If all goes well, my schedule will be:
MWF:
HD 101: Human Development Across the Lifespan 9:10-10
STAT 212: Intro to Statistical Methods 10:10-11 (Lab hopefully Mondays from 2-4)
MUS 262: Rock n Roll: History and Social Analysis 11:10-12 or Online
TR:
SHS 205: Intro to Speech and Hearing Sciences 9:10-10:25
HD 204: Family Systems 12-1:15

My major is Speech and Hearing Sciences with a minor in either Human Development or Psych. The HD courses here are prereqs for the minor, and I got the Psych prereq out of the way this semester.

Had my Chem midterm today. I think it went pretty well but it was definitely a LOT harder than the last one. There was one major question that I totally blanked on until a couple minutes to go, and then it was down to the wire…a little too intense for my idea of a fall Friday morning, haha.

The next thing on my agenda is to sign up for classes next Tuesday. Can’t wait to compete with five thousand other desperate undergrads for spots!

Holy asfdasdjk I just remembered I have a Chem midterm on Tuesday. UGH.

Like I’m P/NPing it but still. I can’t totally fail.

@Coriander23 - I’m sure you did great. People who walk out of tests entirely confident terrify me a little bit.

I’m taking Calc I Pass/Fail next semester and I’m actually incredibly scared I won’t even manage a pass.

@preamble1776 if UMB Calc 1 is anything like UMA Calc 1, it should alright. Did you take the AP in HS?

@Violet1996 - I did in fact take the AP in high school; but I only received a 3 on the exam. I really liked Calculus; I actually finished with a higher grade than I did in AP Gov (and I’m a PolSci major). However, my Calculus teacher in high school was an angel and was really good at making the material easy to conceptualize.

My Calc professor next semester is one of my father’s former colleagues. His ratemyprofessor reviews are less than positive. They’re also pretty contradictory - most state that he hates failing students but he’s an awful professor. A lot call his classes “Easy As” while others say he is an incredibly tough grader with vague criteria and no syllabus. I really have no idea what to anticipate.

It’s midterms week all around, isn’t it? * grumble * I don’t have any more exams until finals week in mid-December, but by then it’ll really be crunch time, so I’m hoping to spread out my studying a bit. And we’ll all survive this together, that’s for sure. If you’ve taken Calc before and passed the AP, I think you’re in really good shape and probably well ahead of the rest of your classmates.

Are you guys excited for break? We only get two days off, but I’m looking forward to the long weekend just the same.

Wait, people are having midterms? I had midterms the first week of October. I technically only had two midterms - and one was an open note essay. (We had two “midterms” in my Environmental science class, but they were take home tests spaced a month apart; and they were on specific units/chapters - so I kind of just think of them as standard tests.)

I have finals the first week of December, I believe.

The whole “you took Calc before and passed the AP” was the argument my father was making when I told him I was nervous - and it makes sense; but I made the mistake of reading an engineering forum/website where a lot of students said they had taken Calc in high school, passed it, but for whatever reason had to retake it in college ended up failing it because the way it was taught was entirely different. I did, however, look up a Calc I final exam from UNC-Charlotte and a lot of came back to me pretty easily. It’s a shame I don’t go to UNC Charlotte, though. LOL.

Are you referencing Thanksgiving break? If so - I only get two days off, but I’m still amped. Thanksgiving? Black Friday? Eating and shopping are my two favorite things. (I’m very American like that
) - My family and I are going on vacation up north. It should be really fun. I love this time of year.

P.S.
Does everyone use the word “amped” to describe excitement?

I have a midterm on Tuesday but that’s because Chem is weird and has 3 midterms. I am not looking forward to any break. I’ll be glad to not be swamped with school work but not glad to be at home.

I had two rounds of ‘midterms’, even though they really divided the courses into thirds rather than halves. Whateva, I’m won’t be sleeping the week after Thanksgiving so I can study for finals.

@preamble1776 You have some foundation, so it really shouldn’t be that bad.

Rate My Professor can be a bit hard to get info from, but I’ve found it helpful.

I can’t believe that we are about to bid farewell to our first semester! I am happy and sad at the same time. I really like my professors, and the courses are semi-interesting. It’s nice to know, however, that I will never have to take an algebra or chemistry class ever again.

On Thursday, I found out that I am not eligible to take the two online classes that I wanted to take. The online classes I wanted to take were from the “online campus” that is part of the university. The campus limits the types of classes that students from other campuses can take.

Luckily, I double-checked my campus’ schedule of courses, and they added an online PSYCH 100 class through my campus, so I should be able to register for that. If not, I will have to take it in the fall. I just really want to take it online because my campus only offers it from 3:00-3:50 MWF, and all my other classes fall on Tuesday/Thursday, so I don’t want to drive for one fifty-minute class on MWF. The thing that sucks about a small campus is that you have a limited number of sections for a certain type of course, so you have limited options on when you can take a course.

I lucked out this semester with finals. I only have three finals out of the five classes I have. My last day of classes is December 12, and I have two finals on Monday, December 15 and one on Wednesday, December 17. Then, I will be ready to celebrate Christmas!

Freshman seminars are the worst

I’m taking my Freshman seminar next semester… it’s on gender. I don’t know how I feel about it - it’s the only seminar that would fit in my schedule. I find gender interesting but I’m rather moderate/conservative and I have a feeling that I’m going to be alongside a lot of more radical/vocal opinions in class and it’ll be overwhelming/frustrating.
