College Class 2018

Online access codes are useful - but NOT at all worth the money! I just dropped $130 for my Science of Materials access code (and it does not come with an etext, so I had to spend another $75 for a used looseleaf book…). I expect that my physics class will have similarly-expensive online code. I also have to buy an access code ($47) for Calc II because the one that came with my book (for calc I) only lasts 6 months.

The fact my 5 African history books combined cost less than any single book / code for another class has me seriously rethinking my major, lol. Not to mention engineering classes cost an extra $50/credit hour. Ugh.

I do have my future schedules planned out - but I am an engineering major. So basically I do what the 4 year flowchart says, and pick out what I want to take with my 5 electives :confounded:

I got my schedule for civil engineering planned out yesterday. I’m on a three year track to graduation which is very unusual for my school because it usually takes five years for civil students to graduate. I only know one fourth year senior whereas I know about twenty fifth year seniors. I want to stay for four years though so I’ll probably drop in to the adviser’s office every week or so and see what my options are for minors and graduate level coursework.

online homework is the worst. It’s so easy to forget about it.

@quidditchcat‌ - I hate online homework in general.

All of my classes are “web-enhanced” which means I have to deal with Blackboard to get readings, submit certain writing assignments, etc. Meh.

I’m in the same boat with the online assignments. All my classes but one have it. Some of them don’t have any assignments that aren’t online - grr.

The reason I don’t like online homework is that for calculus and physics they give really convoluted problems that test basic arithmetic and algebra rather than calculus and physics. Usually problems in textbooks are much nicer in the sense they allow you to focus on the concepts more. The multiple tries at a problem is nice though.

I keep getting paranoid with my online classes because I keep thinking that I forgot to do something. It is easy to forget.

I thought this Reddit thread would be appropriate to share with you guys because, you know, it is COLLEGE Confidential

I just found out that all of my classes are in the same building… on the same floor… LOL. This is great. I won’t have to face the elements at all, all semester.

Speaking of facing the elements, I had a rather frightening experience today on the highway. So I was on the road going back to college today and we driving on the I-95. Suddenly my mom sees a car parked on the side of the road. She quickly turns, trying to avoid the car, however the wheels start slipping on the ice. My mom loses control and we start crashing into opposite ends of the walls, spinning. We ended up doing almost three 360 turns. Thankfully we were able to revert directions quickly and no one was hurt. But as we passed the next turn, we saw that literally fifteen other cars had the same issue and had damaged cars on the side of the road.

I’m really grateful that the cars behind us slowed down or else it would have lead to a domino effect. And to think, that could have been the last time you see shawnspencer. It makes you remember how precious life is, and I quickly called my friends afterwards, saying things that I should have said to them a long time ago.

The fiercest element I had to face last semester was wind/rain/lightning, but that’s definitely not that intense compared to… snow and snowstorms. I broke some umbrellas but that’s pretty much it, nothing like these scary stories I hear.

I start school in two days, and my sleep schedule is still screwed up/non existent. Great.

Ha, saw this yesterday and immediately texted my hs friends to put their social media on private.

I can relate to this. My Mustang has RWD, so any element (rain, sleet, snow) absolutely destroys my traction. Almost crashed last year while going 20mph to make a sharp right turn in a rainstorm when my wheels lost traction and I fishtailed through the other lane, narrowly avoided hitting a car coming from the other way (they swerved into what was my lane after I lost control). In “awful” storms, I now pull a bit past the shoulder (almost off road), flip on my hazards, and wait out the worst.

Extremely glad to hear you weren’t hurt! Car accidents aren’t fun.

My first class of the semester starts within 4 hours.

Yay to 1 class on Tuesdays!

Very much regretting my decision to take an 8AM right about now… So tired…

I remember when I had an 8AM last semester. At first, I didn’t really mind it, but as the semester went on, I didn’t like it as much. The pro of having an 8AM was that I was done by noon on MWF. 8AM classes aren’t the best (especially math), but I wouldn’t mind doing it again.

I was originally going to register for just early morning classes but a couple of specific classes I wanted happened to be late in the afternoon, and as a commuter I didn’t want to have a 4-5 hour break when I couldn’t feasibly go home and I’d be stranded/stuck - so I just shifted everything down (all the 8ams had later sections.) Now all my classes start at 11 and finish either at noon or 3pm depending on the day with no breaks.

I like early morning classes - for school I usually wake up at 5am, get ready and be out the door by 6. I’d make it to campus by 7:15 and then I’d have breakfast and then go to class. My English professor had no problem with people eating at our 9am (it was a small class, too) so sometimes I’d bring my breakfast there and eat since the class was really laid back and mostly just casual discussion.

I wish early was 9 AM. My sleep in days are 9 AM. My normal schedule starts class at 7:30.

Oh my school doesn’t offer classes earlier than 8 - if they did, I’d probably take them. I love finishing my day early. Last semester, I finished at 10:50 on MWF, it was wonderful.

When professors use different websites to post homework/outlines/etc. Stick to Blackboard, dammit. X(

Blackboard? We use Canvas and occasionally Catalyst here. And in high school we used Edline before inexplicably moving on to Aeries (which no one, including the teachers, knew how to use). It would be nice if they finally streamlined everything!
