College Class 2018

@Coriander23‌ does UW still have Pagliacci’s pizza and killer pudding?

WSU food is hit or miss. I’m slowly learning what to avoid and what to go for, and they’re trying to introduce fresh, local options this semester so we’ll see how that goes.

So, I have a question for you guys. In the emails from my online prof, she always signs her emails using just her first name and not “Mrs. So and so.” Does that mean she wants to be addressed by her first name if that’s what she uses in emails? I just don’t want to look disrespectful by calling her by her first name.

I refer to my professors as “Professor” - always; I don’t even use their last name. Just “Hello Professor.”

You shouldn’t call her “Mrs.” unless she tells you to. Normally you would say Dr. (if that’s the case) or Professor, but it looks like she’s allowing you to call her by her first name.

@CheerOutLoud - Yes, Pagliacci’s is still here! In fact, I seem to see them everywhere on campus (although that’s probably because I frequent the same dining venues haha). As for the pudding, I’m not sure about that :frowning: Do you mean the ones they sell in the campus stores? Those are pretty good.

And I would usually address them as Professor [surname], but I think that in your situation, calling your teacher by her first name would work as well.

I always start out calling my professors Dr. so and so, even when I’m not sure if they have a PhD or not. People aren’t usually offended if you think they have a PhD, but they can be offended if you don’t assume it. Mr. and Mrs. usually aren’t used in college, although I often refer to my Spanish profs as señor y señora. Otherwise, it’s weird to use Mr/ and Mrs. Lots of my professors are actually okay with the first name basis, and one of mine even had us call her by her nickname. But there are also some that definitely prefer/expect Dr. so and so.

If I don’t know whether or not they have a doctorate (just google "professor ____ cv " and you can find out), I refer to them as Professor lastName. Otherwise, Dr (or professor if no doctorate).

LOL.

Lol, all of my professors so far have asked me just to call them “Mr. or Mrs. or Miss so and so”, except my one professor, whom I knew had a PhD, so I called her “Dr. so and so.” I just feel weird using first names.

One of my professors last semester specifically asked us to call him “Nick.” I kept finding myself reverting back to his last name though, just out of habit. On the other hand, there was this lady everyone called “Monica” because her last name was too hard to pronounce. In any case, I agree with using professor or asking them what they want to be called unless otherwise noted. For some reason, one of my professors had an odd preference for doctor and not professor and was really adamant about it on the first day of class.

Yeah I just say Professor (surname).

I just found out I made Dean’s List. I was excited about that - I kinda just accidentally stumbled across it. I was looking to see if any other sections of particular classes opened up and I had a notification that my academic standing was “Dean’s List.” I think they’re gonna give me a fancy paper. I’m gonna put it on my fridge. LOL.

I really want next semester to start.

Nice work! That’s definitely fridge-worthy material, haha. I think I made Dean’s List too, but until the slowpoke registrar updates the database from last year I won’t find out for sure.

By the way, did CC change its emoticons? hahaha omg

LOL, yep. Its gonna go right next to my 10 year old sister’s spelling test. I don’t think the registrar sends out formal notification until the middle of the next semester, though. I couldn’t find any definitive answer on my school’s website about what the criteria for the Dean’s List is - I thought that maybe you needed to be enrolled in a certain number of major courses or something but I guess not.

How did you get that face? That’s hilarious.

Well, I’m actually done with week one of classes. It’s crazy how fast time moves. I really enjoy my professors so far, so I think this semester has a lot to offer.

Am I the only one who has future semesters planned already? I am transferring after next year, and I have my whole sophomore year figured out. I should be done with my general education requirements at the end of next year.

Haha I’d like to have my future schedule planned, but it never works out the way I envision. The timings and the course offerings never work out the way I want to, so I improvise and it works out in the end. I’ve had some pretty good professors last semester and hopefully the upcoming one will be the same

I just bit the bullet and bought the last of my books. I rented two for Calc and I was forced to buy the other smaller ones used because there was no rental option. Meh. 200 bucks for 8 books altogether.

I bought my books for this quarter as well, but since I’ll only be using for three months or so I opted to buy them all used (or digitally). That’s actually a pretty good deal for 8 books–I think I spent a similar amount last quarter on just two or three.

I really hope its not just STEM majors that have to buy web access codes in order to do homework. All of my books came in around $80 whereas my access codes came in around $300.

The online access code thing is kind of annoying, but incredibly useful. For those classes I just used the online version instead of buying a paper version. When it came time for econ homework, I’d laugh at my friends who had to draw out entire graphs by hand when I could just shift the demand curve with a simple two clicks
