My online Bi Sci professor kept emailing us today. She was trying to make sure that we were all on the same page and comfortable with the online setting. I can see that she really wants all of us to succeed and know what we’re doing. It’s nice when you can see a professor really going out of her way to accommodate students.
My theater professor is hilarious as well. It should be a fun ride this semester.
My classes on campus start tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to my ed psych class. Speech should be interesting, too.
Oh, and my first lecture in psychology was way more interesting than my whole semester of sociology.
So I’ve decided that I’m going to only get PDF/e-book versions of my textbooks and keep them on my iPad mini. That way, I can easily read on the train during my commute (rather than trying to flip through a hardcover 1500 page history book while I’m squished between passengers) – not to mention that I can accomplish multiple readings at once since I can go from text to text easily. I already have e-versions of 3/8 books.
I think I might get a physical copy of my Calculus solutions manual, though, and keep it at home for reference.
I’m not paying a penny over $60 for my books this semester. I <3 money
I have e-book versions of my textbooks as well and it’s been really convenient (but I get lazy and don’t use them that often). I’ve been thinking of getting a tablet to read with and am debating between the Kindle Fire or Paperwhite.
Out of curiosity, what do you guys usually have for dinner?
Oh my gosh, I was in SO much pain last night. I got an earache, and my left ear was clogged and in so much pain. I tried going to sleep, but it was like someone was stabbing me in my ear. I was wigging out because of having to go to school, and I did not want to have this earache while in class. My mom had some amoxicillin left over from her toothache, and I took like 3 of them. They didn’t work at first. I took like 4 ibuprofen and tried lying in my bed. Out of no where, my ear popped, and the pain went away. I was so thrilled! I just didn’t want to be in so much pain when I had to go to school. This stupid stuff always happens at the most inconvenient time. It couldn’t have happened over break when I had nothing to worry about.
@NewBeginnings3 Hopefully your eardrum didn’t rupture (from the pressure that was causing the pain.) Usually they heal on their own. If you get dizzy, have a fever, hearing loss, or bad pain again, you might want to see a doctor. Also, it’d be a good idea to not go swimming for a while. You don’t want an ear infection! It could have been nothing, but it sounds like a ruptured eardrum to me.

Thanks, @runner019. I think the amoxicillin cured it. I was worried about the ruptured ear drum thing, but I don’t think it did. I haven’t had (TMI) any discharge or loss of hearing, so I think I’m okay. Thankfully.
@NewBeginnings3 Okay, good.
Sorry if I was super over reactive…
@Coriander23 - I live near a really big Asian specialty super market so a lot of my dinners use ingredients from there - but it changes pretty frequently. Recently I’ve been having Udon w/ scallions, bok choy, and fish. My Dad cooks a lot so we have a lot of Middle Eastern/North African food too.
@NewBeginnings3 - Glad you’re feeling better! I would still suggest getting your ear checked out by a doctor in case there’s any lingering infection that the amoxicillin didn’t get to, though.
@shawnspencer- I was mainly referring to collegiate dinners, but if you commute then dinners from home totally work too. Trying to get an idea of how healthy (or unhealthy) all our eating habits are, haha.
@preamble1776 - I usually have pasta for dinner because I live in the residence halls and there aren’t a whole lot of options to choose from. Variety sounds great–I don’t think I’ve had North African food before, but I’d love to try.
I’m not that really a picky eater, so I’ll usually get what’s on the entrée. The only thing really healthy I’ve committed myself to getting is fruit with yogurt and granola on top. That and drinking soymilk instead of other beverages. You bet if there’s mac and cheese, onion rings, or mozzarella sticks I’m getting those. The only thing I specifically stay away from are the pizzas which are far too greasy and the asian food where they put too much soy sauce in. There’s ice cream or froyo every day, but I usually save those for special occasions. All in all, I don’t eat incredibly healthy, but I am also ridiculously skinny so I guess it balances out
My dining center is food court style, and I almost always get my food from the pasta place or the place with home-style cooking. Occasionally the barbeque area or the sandwich place. Every now and again I get stuff from the hamburgers/chicken strips/ etc type place or the global cuisine place. I’ve never eaten the food from the vegan/vegetarian/kosher/halal/gluten free area, or the salad bar, and the pizza place is not somewhere I’m eager to venture back to.
I have ice cream for dessert almost daily. And soda with pretty much every meal.
I’m definitely vegetable-averse and rarely eat fruit.
Yeah, I don’t have the healthiest diet. But it’s not all that different than what I ate at home. Such a contrast from my roommate who eats basically nothing except vegetables, grapefruits, kiwis, quiche, and nuts!
My diet depends on my mood. If there’s fish or chicken, I’ll usually have some of that. For some reason, raw, sliced bell-peppers have become a staple of my meals lol. There’s usually some special sort of bar (quesadilla, buffalo chicken wrap, mac & cheese, risotto etc.) so I might try that. Usually drink juice or lemon/mint water. Desert is usually whatever kind of cake they have lol
My college is often ranked within the top 5 colleges for food within the country. The good food, in combination with the large campus, leads everyone to have very nice legs and rounder stomachs =/
I need to get my sleeping schedule in check.
My first day of classes went really well. I really like my professors. My ed psych class is a Polycom class, and the professor is phoned in from a different campus. It’s kind of weird being on camera, lol. He’s really nice, though. The class consists of presenting an article about education every other week, and there is a midterm and final, and we can use our notes.
My speech professor is interesting. She’s really nice, but she talks too much. Then again, it was syllabus day, so maybe I should’ve expected that :). She also gave us a 20-page syllabus. She seems like she’d go out of the way for us, and she is very passionate about the material, so I think the course will be fun. The class consists of two minor and two major speeches. The minor speeches are 50 points each, and the major speeches are 100 points each. I, personally, would rather deliver a speech than write a five-page essay. I like to verbalize my thoughts a lot!
I decided to drop the music class and keep the online theater class because I didn’t really like the whole evening class thing. If it was for a really important class, I would’ve kept it, but for an art class, I feel that it isn’t worth the 2 1/2 hours each Tuesday night.
My history professor wrote his own textbook and I was worried that it would cost some exorbitant sum. Much to my surprise, he is giving us the PDF version free! I have a new favorite professor.
hmmm, personally I would get a paperwhite, just because I feel like I’m staring at glowing rectangles like most of my waking hours.
goshdarnit, that reminds me, I’ll be going back to gross Cal dining again
Usually I end up getting soup and bread, because those are usually a fixed standard. It’s probably obvious who I am if I say much more, so I’ll just say I eat so much more vegetables at home. And actual rice (lol). And better meat. Sometimes I really don’t know how Cal dining has gotten awards.
yeah, I also need to get my sleeping cycle back to normal… I screwed it up so much I barely know what day it is anymore.
I’m thinking of getting a Paperwhite as well, since it’d be nice to have a dedicated e-reader. Especially since it feels pretty book-like with the cool technology and all.
UW dining is pretty gross too, haha. It’s super bloating though, so I can relate to Violet’s “very nice legs and rounder stomachs” part–our campus is huge but it’s tough to walk off all those carbs. And I only wish we had access to ice cream for dinner!
I just bought my other textbooks. Lord, I really hate spending money on them.
