@jimmyboy23 - The latter. The professor was fiddling with one of the powerpoint slides and I glanced down and saw… human anatomy. I don’t know how she was watching it in public either – but she most definitely was unfortunately. It was honestly so bizarre.
I sit in the front in all of my classes (the aforementioned girl was like in the third row, I was in the fourth row, of a large auditorium) so that I am not tempted to pull out my phone or really do anything other than listen and take notes.
I find myself getting more annoyed over students’ tardiness and other disruptions during class. Students in my one class always arrive late, and I find it constantly annoying when they just walk in the room like it’s nothing. I also hate when people have random conversations during the lecture. The classrooms at my school are very “tight,” so you can hear everything being said. This guy and girl that sit behind me in my one class talk non-stop, and it’s not even like “whisper” talking but actual normal-volume speaking. I just can’t stand when people can’t just shut up and listen. If I were a professor, I’d be so annoyed, but none of my professors seem to care that much.
I’m annoyed by people who show up late but only because they are depriving themselves of being able to learn and do as well as they possibly could. I know that some people have jobs and there was only one time available for the class, but a lot of the time it is hat the person couldn’t be bothered to show up on time because they’re “too cool for that”.
Tardiness only bothers me if they enter loudly.
I’m consistently late to my 9AM class on MWF. I have a class at 8AM, but we usually don’t finish until 8:52 or 8:53. Then it takes me a minute to get on my coat and whatnot, then it’s about an 8 minute walk to my next class, so I don’t get there until 9:05 or so. Both are required for my major. The 9AM class is only offered at one time. The 8AM has another section, but it conflicts with another required class for me, so there’s really not much I can about getting there late (unless I leave the other class early, which imo is even more rude). So I just do my best to enter quietly and sit in the back.
I’m sure other people have similar schedule conflicts and can’t avoid being late. It happens. So as long as they don’t barge in loudly or show up more than 20 minutes late on a regular basis I don’t really judge.
We have a ten minute leeway, so a class that starts at say 8:00 in the catalog will start at 8:10 in actuality. Sometimes ten minutes is not enough, though. It sucks in that case, because sometimes people who aren’t even enrolled are there. I dislike people who come in like 1/2 an hour late, stay for 5 minutes and then leave, and more so if they don’t even sit in an aisle seat in a large lecture hall.
I don’t really care what other people do; I’m generally a really passive person. If people wanna show up half an hour late to a 50 minute class that they’re paying thousands of dollars for, that’s their problem, not mine. I find that people typically aren’t THAT disruptive to the point that it causes me to notice for more than a split second, so its not like its hampering my learning experience.
I was late just once last semester. It was the last week of classes and I decided to go to an IHOP with my friend one morning about two hours before my Religious Studies class and I underestimated how long it’d take to get back to my University so I was about 8 minutes late. It was awkward but my professor really likes me and I’ve never cut class/been late before, so he just assumed I had some valid reason (commute problems, etc) – I certainly wasn’t going to tell him the real reason was that I was having pancakes.
In unrelated news, this Monday will (hopefully) be the first Monday that my University opens all semester. We haven’t had Monday courses at all since the semester began (4-5 weeks?) because of the onslaught of weekend storms. Assuming that the forecasters are right and there isn’t some blizzard barreling towards us as we speak, we’re actually gonna go to class on a Monday. My school is holding a “Happy Monday!” party in the morning to celebrate “the perseverance of students.” There’s gonna be cake.
Interesting all the opinions on being late. At my school people walk in late all the time in the first 10 minutes. Usually in classes of 50ish, no attendance taken, and no disruption. It just seems really smooth and no one seems to mind. I’m often 1-5 min late to my first class of the day.
I don’t care if they come late unless if they are loud and obnoxious pricks. If it comes to that, the professor usually has something to say about it.
Honestly, I don’t think being late is that big a deal if they’re not being disruptive. At this point in the quarter/semester I’m pretty sure professors are secretly glad that students are still showing up to class. There are myriad reasons as to why someone might be late, such as traffic, a conflicting schedule, etc. Don’t sweat the small stuff, really.
hahaha, yeah, there’s a math class in which <10 people show up to lecture… out of 400+ students?
this is kind of pretty late news, but did you all hear about Carnegie Mellon’s snafu with accepted students this year?
@quidditchcat - A woman quit her job and her boyfriend proposed because of the false acceptance. It’s really awful. Especially because CMU’s Comp Sci grad program is tied with MIT/Stanford/and UCB. I hate when that happens and it seems like big schools manage to screw it up at least once every year.
I can’t believe Boyhood didn’t win Best Picture! I haven’t watched the Oscars in years but bothered to look up the list of winners just now. Bummer
Do you guys have a spring or Easter break or both? I have a spring break, and I just realized that it’s only two weeks away. It seems like last semester it took forever to get from the first day of classes to Thanksgiving, but I can’t believe spring break is almost here. Time’s going so fast. I was thinking of telling my work that I could work any days/hours that week, but I might want just to relax and enjoy the time off.
Have you started thinking about your fall classes? I pretty much have an idea of what I want to take, but I am still not certain about the times of each class because the registrar keeps postponing the release of the schedule of courses for the fall semester. I’m pretty sure my schedule won’t work out; I’ll probably have classes that conflict with one another. That’s just how it goes, lol.
With that said, I am now in week seven of the semester - only eight more weeks to go!
I can’t wait for spring break!!!
@NewBeginnings3
Spring break for me does come quicker. Spring break comes eight weeks into the semester; Thanksgiving didn’t come until the 12th or 13th week into the semester.
I’m taking summer classes in order to get through a state of Florida requirement of 9 credit hours during the summer. I’m not entirely sure of what I’m going to be taking but it looks like:
- Fluid mechanics
- Dynamics
- Mechanics of Materials
All upper division civil engineering courses that serve as prereqs and will open up a ton of courses in the fall and spring.
I’ll likely take Differential Equations and Speech over the summer at my community college. In the fall I’ll be taking Linear Algebra, Physics II, Statics & Dynamics, Surveying, and a gen ed (probably the sociology/philosophy requirement).
I’m definitely excited for spring break. It’s been a challenging semester and I need a break. Sucks that I have 4 midterms before then (in 2.5 weeks). In the fall I had half my midterms before fall break and half after which was nice. I’ll probably be going to Omaha NE the last 2-3 days of spring break for a Tae Kwon Do tournament, so I’m very excited for that as well.
Spring break for me is the fourth week of March… I’ve got midterms before then, fun times. I’m terrified to death for my math one. During summer, I’m taking two classes, but not decided on them. For fall, yes, I do have a plan for what I’ll take, but it’s not very fun… I really should’ve killed off my english reqs this year.
I’ve selected my classes for spring quarter (waiting on one still) and pretty much know what I’m going to take fall semester as well. Spring break is in a month for me, but I’ll probably be staying on campus as a tour guide. Should be fun!
Spring Quarter Schedule:
- Forests and Society
- Astronomy 101
- Ceramics: Handbuilding
(I think by the end of this year I’ll have taken every gut class that my school offers)
Wait, is there a generally universal time that schools release course offerings for the next semester? I haven’t head a peep from my school. I really have to see the class times before I decide on anything.
I have this writing proficiency exam I have to take by the time I accumulate 75 credits (so ideally I need to get it done this semester) – if I manage to get it done this semester, then I’m doing study abroad in Italy for Fall15, God willing. I just found out that my scholarship covers the tuition and fees of about 20 schools, two of which are in Rome.
