Classes are in session tomorrow but the University advised us to allow for extra time during our commute. Bleh.
I don’t know how I feel about the whole snow issue. On one hand, I love going to a school where it can be like 60 degrees in February (but also turn into 30 degree temperatures today), but we never get snow that sticks. Like literally we got two snow flurries and they all melted in like a day.
All my friends back home are getting snowstorms galore and have such beautiful campus pictures in the snow (I just want ONE DAY), but I am thankful I don’t have to do any shoveling. It doesn’t feel like winter at all without some snow on the ground. Heck, it snowed more during the week and a half I was home during winter break than it has during the entire school year so far. I guess I just miss the seasons
@jimmyboy23 The day I was really sick I only came for an exam and today I was feeling fine so I attended all my classes. Also, stomach bugs are generally spread through some sort of contact with saliva. So if I wash my hands and don’t touch my mouth, etc, no one else should get the illness in theory. I usually get sick often since I’m an education major, which means I spend a bunch of time with kids that stick their fingers in their mouth and then want to hold my hand.
Today I was supposed to have a quiz in International Relations so I, like the good noodle I am, decided to show up to school a few hours early to study in the library. After I studied for 3 hours, I received an email from the professor saying that the quiz would be postponed until two weeks from now.
(internal screaming)
Long time, no post (ish). It’s been so warm over here that I’ve had to bust out the summer clothes. I had a midterm on… wow, Monday. That feels like such a long time ago.
Any bad luck moments today? It’s Friday the 13th…
@quidditchcat it was so cold today that my friend and I lost the feeling in our ears for 20 twenty minutes =/
Ugh, the coldest weather of the season is happening this weekend. Saturday night it will be -5 with a -25 to -30 degree wind chill. Sunday night will be more of the same. I like winter, but I am ready for spring.
Spring gets me excited. The warm weather makes summer not seem so far away. It’s still going to be weird when I finish classes on April 30th. This long summer is going to be awesome! This academic year has gone so fast. Week 6 of the semester starts Monday. What?!?!?
I had to email my one professor about my participation grade. She only gave me half the points for one week, and I’m not really sure why. I really dislike participation grades for this reason. A professor could easily say that you did not fully participate in class, and there would be no proof for that. I’m not saying that she would do that, but you just never know. I asked some of my friends what they got, and they have the same grades as me. I’m hoping it was a typo on her behalf. I’ll probably still end up with an A in the class, but I just want to know why I got only half the points.
I couldn’t keep up the grade grubbing in college. I hate doing it and the professors hate listening to it. That said, arbitrary grades are bullshit!
@dextrous - What do you mean?
I’m not really sure if this is classified as “grade grubbing.” I just want to know why I only got half the points. It’s not like I’m begging her to rethink her decision. Participation grades can be either very good or very bad.
grade grubbing is just asking for an inconsequential amount of points (getting an extra 3% added to a test that is only 15% of your overall grade). It isn’t a necessarily bad thing, but it has negative connotations because it makes it seem as though the person is constantly stressed over things they shouldn’t be stressed about and constantly badgering the professor for leeway.
If you think the participation credit will make a significant difference in your final grade then you should definitely go ask your professor about it if she doesn’t respond to the email.
She did respond to my email, and she noted that she enjoys my conscientiousness of my grade. She told me not to worry about it too much and just to focus on future assignments. She really didn’t give me a concrete explanation as to why I got the score that I did, which is odd to me. I feel like she should be able to tell me why I got the score that I did. She seemed to be beating around the bush. I’m just going to let it go because it won’t affect my final grade too much. I can miss about 50 points in addition to the 15 I lost and still get an A, and I don’t think that I’ll miss 50 more points.
Because of the snow, classes are cancelled all day, which also means our CS midterm. So our professor decided to make it a take home exam!
@guineagirl96 I was just at your school this weekend for a mock trial tournament! How do your students all not weigh >1k lbs? That diner is absolutely amazing.
@Vctory haha I have no idea! The dessert bar is kinda a problem for me, especially if they have two kinds of cheesecake in one day.
I think it was pretty clear what I meant and jimmyboy explained it well
I got a 100% on my first Calculus exam.
Have you guys heard of “second hand screen distraction” or whatever - like just someone using some sort of device in class that has a screen (phone, tablet, laptop, etc) is enough to distract a lot of people around them? Yeah well today I was in International Relations and a girl two rows in front of me was watching a film… of the adult variety, and it wasn’t even distracting so much as it was kind of terrifying (it was like 10am???) so anyways, there was other room in the lecture hall so I moved over.
Yes screens are very distracting. This is part of the argument that sitting in front improves your grades (you don’t see anything distracting in front of you except for the professor).
By “adult”, do you mean “Taken” or “Soccer moms on the prowl 4”.
I don’t understand how someone could watch the latter in public.
