College Class 2018

@dextrous - Last semester, I only did readings that had assignments directly related to them (like in English, I’d have to read an article then answer questions, etc) - but I didn’t do just the general assigned readings because most of my tests were based on lectures. I’m trying to change that this semester, though - I’ve been doing all of the readings for all of my classes and I’m trying to stick to it. Even in Calculus, I typically outline the chapter prior to the lecture on that section.

I’ve only had one class with assigned readings (yay for being an engineer lol), and it is a small class (7 people) that is almost entirely discussion based. So if I can’t say something semi-intelligent about the readings it’s fairly obvious… So I at least skim the entire thing we are assigned. However if I had more than one humanities-type class, or fewer discussions, that would almost definitely change.

My school might close tomorrow - which means that in the course of two weeks, I have attended a total of 2 days worth of classes. LOL.

Snow day!

I hate my professor’s mandatory attendance policy :frowning: Technically, prof’s aren’t allowed to have those at my college, but he assigns in class questions worth 5% of my grade so I have to sit through this hour and a half lecture just to get 5 random questions/class.

Seriously considering watching Netflix in this lecture and just checking in every once in a while to get the questions.

I like attendance policies (I think) - my Environmental Science class last semester was a drag but attendance was 40% of the grade which meant that 100% attendance an minimal effort on the three (take home…) tests guaranteed at least a B. My International Relations course has in-class “quick write” exercises every Friday - if we miss it, we get a 0. But the idea is that they’re super easy and that if we don’t miss any for the whole semester, we don’t have to sit for the final (the assumption would be that you’d have a perfect score for the quick write average, and that would just be used for your final too - and the quick writes only take like 3 minutes each and they’re open note)

Eh, I didn’t read any of the assigned readings in my humanities classes but still got grades that I didn’t feel I deserved. I didn’t even participate that much in class. But whatever, I’m not gonna contest for a lower grade. That said, I am doing assigned readings for classes I actually find interesting, like linguistics. I read math textbooks but work through the examples on my own as I go.

Oh, I have mandatory classes… A sign-in sheet is passed around… So I guess technically I could ask someone to sign in for me, but then again my handwriting is pretty distinctive; my professor would notice Then I have one class where it’s actually recommended not to go to lecture, haha.

Missed my first lecture of the semester. Calculus is too easy here; I can’t believe how worried I was about that class before the semester started.

Another snow day for tomorrow. I haven’t gone to class on Monday or Tuesday all semester. They will likely close on Tuesday too.

The snow basically crippled the one major train line that professors and students use to get to my school, so methinks there won’t be school tomorrow (or even Wednesday) – all of my professors are emailing me in complete hysteria about how we are so far behind.

My professor sent an email out about he was too sick to teach today, was really sorry, etc. I was getting all excited for a cancelled class… But after 15 lines of email about how he’s too sick to teach ends with a footnote that his friend agreed to teach for the day… Just as I had gotten my hopes up… :frowning:

I just took my first exam in one of my online classes. I was really nervous for it all weekend because my prof told us to read the chapters in the book, but obviously, I didn’t take that advice. I got an A on it, so I am happy! I heard the first exam was the hardest, too, so I should be okay moving forward.

Another snow day tomorrow! LOL, 12 days into the semester and we’ve only had 4 days of class.

Can you share some of those snow days? It’s starting to feel like spring down here.

@Vctory‌ - Very few people are excited about all this snow. We’ve actually run out of places to put the snow, so a lot of cities are asking for permits to dump the snow into the ocean and local rivers (which is illegal in MA). The MBTA (Boston’s primary public transit system) has shut down completely today, and when the MBTA is down, Boston is virtually disabled.

Another foot is coming on Thursday - and more snow on Sunday. This is the snowiest month in Boston’s history.

@preamble1776 I was doing cardio at the gym yesterday and watching all of the coverage; it looks rough!

We haven’t had too much snow in my area, but it’s been COLD. Friday-Sunday of this week will be the coldest stretch, I think. The high on Sunday is supposed to be in the single digits. Ugh, and I am trying to housebreak my new puppy. Grrrrrr

I have the stomach flu. Ugh. I really don’t want to go to my classes tomorrow. :frowning:

@runner019‌
If I was one of your classmates, I wouldn’t want you coming to class sick. Don’t be one of those assholes who comes to school sick and gives it to everybody else. I’ve had that happen to me far too many times.
