[Fact Sheet: College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007](<a href=“Briefing Room | The White House”>Briefing Room | The White House)

The President also proposed increasing the maximum annual Pell award to $5,400 over the next five years and making Pell Grants available year-round.

What does year-round mean? What would change?

it means if you didn’t use your max pell grant during the regular school year, you would have some $$ for summer classes.

I doubt that would help many people since if you get a Pell grant you usually would need all of it to pay for the regular school year

It looks the the govt giving itself a pat on the back for nothing much

It will be interesting to see what the PELL grant actually is over the next few years. The maximum was supposed to be $4800 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. It is actually $4731 for 2008-2009 because it is not fully budgeted. And although it has increased since last year the maximum EFC to be eligible for any PELL has actually gone down. Last year an EFC of 4110 would have qualified you for $400 of PELL. This year an EFC over 4041 you get no PELL.
