Hi!
What schools did you feel would be solid even though they were not audition schools?
We are looking for a few backups with decent programs.
Thank you!

@Massmom72 I would look at programs that are a BA Dance as those would not have auditions typically and tend to just have a placement class. I believe USF is an example of one and many other states have state schools or universities with BA programs in dance that require no audition (strictly placement classes). I do not know of any BFA programs that do not require an audition but there may be others here who know of something.
U of Wyoming has a BFA in dance performance that does not require an audition for entry. My D has spoken to the head of the department via email and phone and is very happy with the offerings. They do offer an audition for scholarships for those who wish to participate.
DS’s top choice seems to be UCI for a couple of reason, Sister is a 3rd-year Biology major there, so he will be able to stay with her and share an apartment and he will be able to pursue a BFA in Choreography. They also have research opportunities for choreo and performance as well. If I had to guess 2nd choice it would be USC or UCLA.
@gmfalv Congrats on your DD get passed the prescreen for Pace. We are having the damnedest time getting the audition videos right. His ballet teacher has been helping a ton, especially with the photos.
Thanks! The videos can be from a competition solo or something previously recorded if you have anything you feel is strong enough!
We used her YoungArts submission video for the prescreen and then for the “wild card” used a video from her complexions summer intensive.
Anybody know the dates for UCSB’s January 2020 auditions?
Scoping out if auditions at UCI, UCLA, and UCSB could be performed during the same trip from Florida.
DD competed her first audition at the Pace Fall intensive.
Looks like UCSB was Jan 27th and Feb 3rd in 2019. My spreadsheet from the year before says Jan 28th and Feb 4th 2018. So I think a safe bet is Sun Jan 26th and Feb 2nd 2020.
A question for all… Do you all think that auditions on back to back, and possibly a 3rd, days will be too much? I was looking at audition days and trying to make a schedule and I saw that Pace’s LA audition date is 1/31/20 and UCI has an audition day 2/1/20. Since my DS’s top choice school is UCI, I wanted to get as much auditioning experience prior to that audition.
Ran across a problem while looking at scheduling of auditions. Has anyone come across live auditions for two schools that land on the same day? If so what do you do in those cases?
My daughter did three auditions in three days, including a red-eye flight! :o I don’t recommend it, but it was the only way to do it for those programs.
As for two on the same day, that’s rough. If you can’t do both then I guess you have to choose the one you want more and then send a video or whatnot to the other program.
We did back to back interviews on consecutive days on several occasions and even auditions in SoCal and NorCal on consecutive days. But I don’t think there was any occasion when two auditions in different locations on the same day would have been feasible. Everywhere offered at least two dates to help mitigate conflicts (albeit in one case we had to do LA instead of SF). If that still doesn’t work ask if you can do an in class audition.
My D did several last year that were 1-2 days apart. One we had to leave right after the audition, fly to land at 11:30 pm; drive 1.5 hrs; then audition registration at 8:30am in place we’d never been! I think that was a Friday and sat then did another audition on Monday in a different location. Actually, while it was exhausting for me, D loved the whole experience! And she ended up being accepted with scholarship to all 3 and ultimately chose one.
@mom2adancer Here is a scenario that might play out, the school that you want more offers video auditions while the other doesn’t, except for international students. Would you forgo the live audition with the favored school and just send in video audition or scrap the idea of applying to the less desired school and go all in on the favored one?
We also did several weekends in a row with lots of traveling. It is tricky to map it all out and there was one school I think she probably would have loved that we just could not get on the schedule with all of her other commitments. My husband always said that if that was our biggest problem then we are truly blessed. I do know that it seems to all work out in the end! Sometime around the end of February I was not able to see how she could ever come to a decision. Haha. But she did. And now I get to do it again this year! So I am with you on all the planning and calendar craziness!
It looks like the way things are setting up there is going to be 3 straight days of auditions in 3 different locations. Luckily, they are all around So Cal - LA on Friday, OC on Saturday and SD on Sunday. That Friday is the sticky day, as OOS school holding live auditions in LA along with local school.
you should definitely prioritize the school you want more. and either forego or choose a different date if possible for the other
@NevrMynd51 Also, While many will allow video auditions, only live auditions will be considered for scholarships. Something to look for.
The question then becomes, what if you feel like you have a much better chance at getting into the less favored school???
I’d go with the higher choice live audition if faced with that choice.
