@linda743 Thanks you! Did your daughter decide on Pace? If so is she happy there?
Good luck to everyone applying and auditioning! My daughter is Junior in High School. I am just wondering, as a Dance major does the ACT / SAT count?? Specifically for U Michigan, Indiana, NYU? Thanks for any words of wisdom. We haven’t even started and I am stressed at the thought of this process!!! Good luck to everyone!!!

@REZREZ for any college, you have to be admitted academically as well as into the dance program. The schools you mention are all fairly competitive academically, so it definitely matters! We have also found that for other, less academically competitive schools, a strong academic record, though not as needed for admission, has helped my dd get merit scholarships to help defray costs.
No, she isn’t at Pace. But has many friends there who absolutely love it!
It depends on the school. NYU is test optional for dance. IU just announced that some programs won’t require the SAT/ACT anymore.
The ACT has really helped us put these out of state schools or private schools within financial reach due to the academic merit she has received for ACT score.
@REZREZ i can only speak for Michigan so far- (D didn’t apply to Indiana, and waiting on NYU results)
My D was accepted into the Dance program back in December- I know for a fact that although my D has good grades- her grades are no where near as high as the typical student accepted to Michigan Early Action- so her dance talent was what she was admitted on.
We submitted Early Action Dance application in October- passed prescreen (in order to make it to audition on campus you need at least a 3.0 GPA and 1180 SAT score)- then auditioned on campus second week in November. She found out she was accepted about 3 weeks later.
She absolutely loves Judy Rice who is the ballet teacher and really runs a lot of the program- its a serious consideration for her because of the amazing opportunity it would be to attend Michigan.
@REZREZ you also are required to submit either ACT or SAT for Michigan- at least a 24 ACT or 1180 SAT to make it past prescreen
@REZREZ DO NOT underestimate the importance of GPA and Test Scores. I was very surprised at the level of academics expected for BFA programs. That being said your more “conservatory” programs are going to be much more lenient. My D is looking for a solid dance program but wants to double major- so it has been very important.
@emilyhuntnelson you’re so right. a talented dancer from my D’s studio has been either not getting past prescreen at a lot of schools or getting rejected because of her grades. Majority of these BFA programs want to see you’ve both challenged yourself in the classroom and in the studio. Also at the end of the day- dance talent scholarships are usually only a few thousand dollars, whereas the academic merit that comes from each school usually makes up the vast majority of the scholarship money.
I didn’t mean grades and scores do not matter. I was just saying some schools are test optional. My daughter had great grades and test scores and received significant academic scholarship money.
Has anyone here auditioned for - or heard back from UNCSA? My D had an audition 2 weeks ago and still waiting to hear. Just curious. TIA
Dd got her acceptance from Adelphi today with no numbers but that she was recommended for a dance talent scholarship. All good but honestly I think it’s a no either way.
She also got a nice academic scholarship from Ohio State. We haven’t visited there yet (since she got accepted through Dancewave and didn’t have to audition) so now we have to decide if she’s interested enough for us to take a trip to Columbus…
The only other thing we’re waiting on at this point is merit aid from VCU, which apparently they are very late in communicating about…
ALL MY SYMPATHY to those of you who are waiting on schools who won’t let you know until March!!
@NavigatingMom my daughter auditioned on 1/20. Yesterday, received an email from UNCSA asking for proof of daughter’s senior year courses as her portfolio was in review
@czgator Thanks for the update! Good to know they are working through the portfolios now - sounds like we should hear something soon. Keep us posted!
@NavigatingMom daughter received UNCSA acceptance today from dance department (audition 1/20). Letter stated school acceptance arrives separate from admissions once items are reviewed
@czgator Did she get a letter in the mail or email? Congrats!!
@NavigatingMom Thank you! It was an email. To be clear, it does say congratulations we recommend acceptance to admissions. To me, it meant the same as dance department accepts her. Hoping admissions agrees
Do you feel there is any merit in attending a college dance program accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance? I was surprised at the list by state. https://nasd.arts-accredit.org/directory-lists/accredited-institutions/
