I am close to making a final decision based on engineering program rankings, college environment, alumni, job opportunities, food etc. and now its down to Virginia Tech, CU Boulder and UCDavis for College of Engineering. I want to major in computer engineering and am OOS from the west coast (WA).
I would love to get any feedback to help my decision since I do not have a scholarship at either and Virginia Tech will be ~60k, CU Boulder ~64k, UCDavis ~75k.
Were you admitted into computer engineering at all three schools?
All of them are comfortably affordable for you and your parents?
Note that VT has secondary admission to major, but a 3.0 GPA automatically admits undeclared engineering students to their choice of engineering major.
In addition to the great questions already asked above, have you visited all of the schools already, or are you planning an admitted student visit?
yes financially parents are fine with it al though UC Davis has a little higher price tag.
Do you have a preferred geographic area for where you want to live after undergrad?
VTech is the best value and since you mentioned food… it’s the best by far on that point.
Obviously CU Boulder will be closer but other than that I don’t see a difference in terms of educational quality or outcomes.
They’re relatively similar in terms of cost -
Then, it becomes a matter of preference: classic college town or city? Weather? Structure of the major? Any living-learning community that looks interesting on either campus?
(For food, VTech always wins)
Keep in mind ease of travel. Sometimes folks forget about it, but Davis is an easy trip from Seattle. Boulder sure. Va Tech is deep and travel for T-Giving and Xmas is multi flight likely and makes for $ and long travel day. We live near SF and I had one who passed on acceptance at a handful of solid east coast schools in favor of UW. My other done went to Wisco and that even resulted in long days. All doable but don’t forget to play that part out cost and time. Good luck.
