Hey guys! I have to decide between Heidelberg University in Tiffin Ohio and the University of Akron. I am a quiet, academically-focused student who wants to avoid drinking and partying but I want to have clubs to join so that I’m not bored. I’m really confused because Akron seems like a good school but it is not as individually focused as Heidelberg and I’m scared of getting lost in the mix. Help!
Heidelberg is probably the better choice; especially from an academic standpoint.
Here are some statistics:
Only about 10% of U.Akron students complete their degree in 4 years, and only about 33% complete it in 6 years. But at Heidelberg, over 40% finish in 4 years and nearly 60% finish in 6 years.
Similarly, only about 10% of Akron students pursue post-graduate school immediately following graduation, but over 25% of Heidelberg students do.
Tiffin is kind of a nice, safe little town. I have relatives there, and have visited about a half dozen times. From what I have heard about U.Akron, the areas of the city near campus are a bit on the seedy/sketchy side.
On the other hand, if you don’t think that you would fit in at Heidelberg then it could be a poor experience for you. Yet, even there, it probably would not be difficult to transfer to U.Akron or another state school after a year at Heidelberg.
So, my advice is to give Heidelberg a try, understanding that you can transfer if you do not like it.
I second everything NROTCgrad said above!
Heidelberg will have better academics and more focused students.
(Frankly, also, UAkron is not that good of a school so if you don’t like Heidelberg, you can always transfer to UAkron or another state school).
