College dorm room

Outfitting my son’s college dorm room for this summer and wondered if anyone has suggestions for easy online store that carry the essentials at good prices (not a big fan of BBB)

Have you looked at Overstock?

Target - - -

TJMaxx/Marshalls…there’s a few good threads about what to get/what doesn’t get used that you might want to read. Boys notoriously don’t “need” half of what we think they need.

My son never opened his second set of sheets. My daughter did use hers, however. Keep it simple. He will need less than you think and much of the stuff he probably already has at home. The more he takes, the more you have to lug there and back.

Take the bare minimum. Anything that he finds he needs, he can buy when he gets there. I’m assuming he’s not going to somewhere that’s totally out in the sticks and without an internet connection…

Wait for the summer sales and availability. Penneys and Kohls have good sheets. Do not count on the college town having any remaining stock when students arrive. Consider buying online and picking up in the college town, however.

I know you said that you are not a great fan of BB&B but in buying stuff for my daughter I found out the hard way that running to three or four different stores did not save me a lot of money… including for things like soap and various sundries. It would have been so much simpler to just get everything from BB&B. We were able to go to our local BB&B and order things that were ready to pick up at the BB&B by her college AND we were able to change our minds about buying any of it. So if the item turned out not to fit in her dorm, we just didn’t buy it. It’s a really good service.

The Company Store has a good selection of XL twin stuff.

The one critical piece of information is whether the school has XL mattresses or not.

one set of sheets, pillow, comforter- target or BBB is great for choices. D went all out this year (3rd year) and bought a memory pillow- she loves it - worth the money - but I think she appreciated it more when the first 2 years were roughing it- and she was so sleepy most of the time she ended up on the floor or someone fell asleep on her floor in the dorm.

I agree to wait. First, does he know which dorm he will be in? What is the layout of the room? How big is the room? Will they have lofted beds? What does his roommate have? Does he know his roommate. Our kids’ school has NOT had XL twins in some of their rooms.

Sign up for Amazon Prime and have things shipped to him at school. Like other’s have said, take bare minimums, one set of sheets, blanket, comforter, school supplies, extension cords and power strips and make a list of what he actually needs once he moves in. Besides, getting mail is fun.

good advice. thx

Thanks for all of the advice. I did try Overstock and found them great for a few items but lacking in others. As I said not a big fan of BBB (overwhelming, but that’s just my personal opinion). I ended up buying from the web site of a local store we shop in – University Housewares and get everything we needed plus free shipping since we spent over $99. In case anyone cares…its [University Housewares](http://www.universityhousewares.com/)
