College Essay about being a test tube baby

Everything you read about college essays says to tell how you are unique. Both of my kids are test tube babies. My D is applying to college this year and her ACT coach is telling her she should write about being a test tube baby. She has always kept this private, so it is a big step for her to write about this. But my concern is this: is this still too controversial to write about. I know the Catholic Church is still very opposed to IVF and I’m concerned that some admission people may hold this against her.

Let me know if you think some adcons may consider this a negative and if this could hurt our chances at some schools.

I would not write about that topic. Unless your daughter is somehow interested in genetics or bio and her knowledge of her being an in vitro baby encouraged her interest. Today with all the implantation that goes on is it less unique and does not really represent why she is different.

I would advise against this. In all frankness, IVF is not unique enough to make her stand out.

You never know who is reading the essay

The events leading up to and surrounding IVF all happened before she was involved personally. It seems to me that a better topic choice would be something in which she was an active participant.
