College Essay Ideas

I am a junior and I will most definitely be working on my college essays over the summer.

Here, so far, are my strengths and weaknesses.
Weaknesses:GPA, SAT scores
GPA is a 3.7.
SAT is 1850, but when I improved to a 2200 on a practice test. Taking it in October again.
Strengths: EC’s (particularly politics and music)
Check this thread, which has my EC’s

Hooks: Can speak 3 languages?

I want an essay that explains my abominable grades. My eating disorder has occupied me all throughout my junior year, and I was obsessive. But at the same time, I am to blame for not being strong-willed enough to study harder.

Here’s my general list
Eating disorder and I how I overcame it
My experience campaigning at the midterm elections

This should not be your main essay. If there is a need to explain bad grades, that should be done in a supplemental essay and/or by your guidance counselor. Your main essay should allow the college to find out what sort of person you are and allow them to infer what sort classmate and presence on campus you might be.

How bad were your grades junior year? Are you still in junior year? Are there opportunities to raise them by, say, doing well on finals? If so, that should be your main focus right now.

I am skeptical about this for an essay. You have many cool things going on; is it truly the case that the central thing you are bringing to a college is your battle with an eating disorder?

I agree strongly with author Alan Gelb when he advises that there are three things your essay should NEVER, EVER do: Brag about yourself, explain/apologize for your behavior, or complain about anything.

I think your love for music is a good one. Explain why you love it, what it has done for you, and how you believe it will help you in the future.

Write about your human experience.
