college essay question

so its summer and im going into my senior year. a lot of my friends have told me to start my college essay and to start applying to colleges. problem is that ive been focusing on improving my sat score so i havent started yet. i plan to take the next sat in october. so can you guys tell me when i should start my essay and applying considering the fact the im focusing on improving my sat score? my sat score is around 1600’s and im working diligently to bump it up to at least 2000+ if that helps
thanks!!

It’s really a juggling act. Once you’re done with testing, you’ll be in the midst of sr year and all of the demands of academics and ECs. You need to assess your courseload, EC commitments, number of supplemental essays, etc. and figure out the best balance for you.

I would start working on essays, before school starts. You can’t be SAT preping 24/7. Read over the Common Application essay prompts (if you will be applying to schools that use it) and work on brainstorming as a first step. It can take some time to come up with good ideas and to work through drafts of a good essay. You don’t want to be writing them at the last minute. It’s good to be able to write it and set it aside to look at later, after you have thought on it.

thanks! anymore suggestions? bump thanks

My kids wrote theirs late in the game. But they had been doing what Entomom and BP suggest: thinking about it, running through ideas, etc- and looking at their other time commitments. It’s too important to risk being blindsided later, pulling your hair out on CC.
