College Essay?

This year, I was pretty sick for 2 weeks in January (two viruses at the same time- Chicken Pox and Coxsackie) amongst major assignments, and a state exam in less than one week.

I ended up coming back to school ahead of schedule- I never missed a beat with my work, my GPA/Rank did not slide at all.

My mentor said “Oh, come on, like if you had cancer, maybe you could do that, but everyone gets the Chicken pox… come up with something better for your essay.”

Honestly, what is CC’s opinion on this? Can I use this for an essay or no?

The topic is practically irrelevant. Good writers can make the mundane sparkle. Poor ones make exciting topics dull.

The question for you is: “Which one are you?”

Unless you pulled it off in a spectacularly funny and well-written way, the essay topic seems like a bad one. This is not meant to belittle your fantastic accomplishment at all, but some people suffer from much worse and can pull off the same. If the purpose of the essay is only to illustrate that you were sick and still excelled, then you should put that into the additional information section/ask your guidance counselor to include it in your recommendation/do both. You can write your essay about anything, so do it about something really special!

Yeah, I’m going to be honest, I don’t think that topic has a lot of power to it. It’s not just very interesting.
