Well, we are Vince Young days away from the no. 1 team meeting the no. 2 team in the first week of the college football season, and I thought it was high team someone started a thread. Apparently, that someone is me.
Naturally, as a lifelong fan of the no. 1 team, I am beyond excited for the season. Poor Arch Manning will never live up to the hype, but I’m betting that he can at least put together a 10-2 season and get us back to the playoffs, where I like our chances.
Vince was, indeed, spectacular. We still have his pic hanging in our garage. And, yes, it was the Rose Bowl. He was mad after being snubbed by the Heisman committee. Vince was dangerous when he was mad. I’ll always loathe Fisher for how Vince was treated at the Titans.
I think most of the Arch hype is from outside the UT fanbase. Thankfully, his family is used to the pressure, and I think it’ll affect him less than it would other people.
I just watched the six-part docuseries on the KC Chiefs. Really good. If you want a college one, try this three-parter about the 2005 championship season. If you don’t want to watch the whole thing, just watch the last episode, which focuses on that Rose Bowl. People thought USC had it locked up before the game was played.
I’ve always been a pro football fan, but last year, when my child was a senior in HS and wanting only “big sports schools” for college, I started watching so that i could at least be conversant with wherever he ended up. And one of our visits for prospective students that the school was trying to entice included an option to buy inexpensive tickets, so we went to a UTK game in person - and I have never seen anything like that in my life. Last week my boy started at Clemson, so that’s going to be my team to watch now. (We laughed that at the end of the day, he had Clemson, UTK and Virginia Tech as his top three schools - only needed to add Texas and Syracuse to get a full bandwidth of orange themed schools. Also, I look like crap in orange.)
Oh, I like Clemson! I started following them when Andrew Mukuba left my kids’ HS to play for them. And then, of course, he transferred back home to UT for his final year and killed it and got drafted by the Eagles but he got a pick-six this past weekend so I am THRILLED for him. I should have gotten his autograph in HS when I had the chance!
Oh, I just realized that this link says episode one, but it’s all three parts. You easily can watch it at 1.25 speed. Yes, I’m “watching” it again right now. If you knew how many times I’ve seen this … but I catch something new every time. Funny that that championship season started at Ohio State.
Also, I can’t believe that Aaron Rodgers was competing then and is still in the NFL.
Since Dad had such a big role in the athletic program at Texas for more than 15 years, I just get very nervous when the team is hyped up so much. I don’t want him to be disappointed or have a heart attack!!
I probably shared that when we were planning his funeral the FIRST time we thought he wasn’t long for this world, I contacted the Dean of the Engineering School and she arranged for members of the Longhorn band to play. It was cool that he survived, because we could tell him what we’d planned. He said, “They would do that for ME??” Uh, yes, Dad!
I don’t know the present Dean, but I’m hoping we can arrange something when the time comes (probably many years from now!). The SECOND time we planned his funeral, we thought he was going to pass literally within a couple of days, so I didn’t have time to contact anyone. Then he bounced back miraculously.
If it was the 1980s, Michigan would have gotten the death penalty. Been banned. Instead it’s Jim Harbaugh. He got NAILED. 10 year show cause. Wow, the cheating was INSANE.

For years team’s have complained about other teams. Stealing signs, recordings, getting their playbooks etc etc.
Saban when asked about Michigan said something like “football is played on the field. Nothing else matters”.
Nice justification - but that part is true to. I do think Harbaugh is a very good coach. Sad it came to that.
And yes it’s played on the field, but if you know what’s coming, it sure seems like defending would be a heck of a lot easier.
Like in baseball - you know the curve ball is coming - sure you’ve still go to hit the ball but knowing it’s not a fastball or slider increases your odds exponentially.
Not unreasonable to maintain that college football is all about recruiting. Of course, other factors come into play, but they are insignificant when compared to the importance of recruiting.
I don’t like cheaters but it happens in every sport. Many allegations through the year’s of other teams also. This is why every coach covers their mouth with their play board.
But I would rather talk about the upcoming season and if there is a thread on the ncaa football ruling post over there.
