College Goals and Possibilities

I posted this on another forum, and then realized this one would be better

I’m only a sophmore, but I would like to get some ideas about what my goals should be andwhat schools might be suitable for me. Though it’s a bit early, I’d still like to have somewhat of an idea of what I could be aiming for.

I will be interested in either majoring in social sciences, marketing, or something art related. I’m also interested in fashion, but most likeley as more of a hobby than a career.

I’m looking for schools in CA or in North East/MidAtlantic
I’d prefer a college to be in or within driving distance to a city, or in a small, quaint town. I don’t think I’d do well in a rural area.
I dont care about size right now
Financial Aid is always good but isnt THAT important as of now

So I really don’t know what I should be looking towards in terms of academic and extracuricular goals and such. I only know that I do want to go for some more selective schools but I dont know how selective is reasonable. Any suggestions?

Oh yeah, and I was looking into Cornell b/c they have a Apparel/Textiles Department, and are the only Ivy to have one. I wish it wasn’t in freaking Ithaca though. IDK if I can handle a rural area like that.

In my view, you need to consider a school that has many majors for you to choose from. The reason is that you appear to still be undecided whether you will end up in:

(1) a social science–History, Sociology, Political Science, or Anthropology
(2) business–marketing/advertising, international business, maybe business law,
(3) fine arts–graphic arts, visual arts, artistic creations
(4) communications–persuasion/debate/regular law courses, maybe journalism
(5) motion pictures and theatre–acting, stage design, directing, script writing, comedy, or
(6) television/telecommunications–all of the items listed in #5 above, but geared towards TV/radio

For this reason, you should consider a major university that has all of these departments–but that focuses on general education during the first two years. During the first two years, you can take these courses, and see what you like the best.

Fortunately, there are lots of schools that fit this category in both California and the NE for people with your grades and background. The schools listed below are those primarily for people like yourself with really good grades.

In California–all the UCs have most of the above, except for business–which is only at Berkeley and Riverside (at the undergrad level). Stanford has this, so does USC. Other possibly schools are Santa Clara and Cal Poly SLO–though this last one focuses more on the sciences.

In the NE–most of the Ivies (all but Cornell) fit the bill, as does Tufts, Boston College, NYU, Fordham, and maybe the Univ of Connecticut. If you are willing to go to Philadelphia, there is also Villanova–if to Baltimore and Washington, D.C., then consider Georgetown, and John Hopkins, and possibly the Univ of Maryland. (Keep in mind that the liberal arts colleges lin the NE–Amherst, Colgate, Williams, Wellesley, and Vassar–will probably not have the TV/radio courses and possibly the film schools that the others have–and will definitely not have business courses–so they are not on this list for that reason).

P.S. The other 7 Ivies (not Cornell) are Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia, Univ of Penn, and Brown.

Good luck to you.

wow. thanks, that was really helpful!
and I’m definitely willing for Philly…my cousins live closeby there.
