My S is very interested in playing golf in college- Division 2 or 3, outside shot @ small D1 school. He is beginning his junior year. He is a 3.4 student. I know that education and not a golf score will better determine his ultimate future. So, I have not sought high profile jr tournaments, or expensive lessons with golf pros, etc. However, if golf could get him into a “better” college, possibly with some $$ thrown his way, that would be good. In 3 open qualifiers this summer, he has shot 75,77,78. I’m not sure how much emphasis to dedicate to golf in the next 12 months? It’s a spring sport, so his senior HS stats won’t count. Not sure how to impress even D3 coaches. I wonder if any other CCers have had a S in a similar situation and can offer ANY advice to us. thanks

Timely question - since my son told me five minutes ago that, yes, he is interested in playing college golf. He’s a pretty typical boy in that he is not participating in any way in any college conversation but I am learning in very, very tiny bits and pieces that he wants a small school, no greek life and wants to play golf. Slowly but surely, we’re getting there.

He is a rising senior so time is of the utmost importance to us. His golf is also a spring sport. First of all, you’ll want to check out the Ping College Golf Guide (just google it) which gives you all the info you’ll really need, including the tournaments he should be playing.

My son would be a DIII golfer. As a point of reference, the no. 1 player on his HS team is in the running for DI - probably big 10 school and he has a 72 average. He only plays the top tier tournaments, including AJGA which is where the college coaches are looking.

My son will need to be “marketed” to schools where he is an academic match. I play on videotaping him this summer (luckily with golf you can do that any time) with a variety of shots. Couple that with a resume and lots of DVD copies and then ship them off to schools. Also, on every school’s website there’s usually an on-line form you can complete and send to the appropriate coach which will give that coach some basic info on your kid.

Start with the Ping guide - it will answer a lot of your questions. Good luck!

For starters avoid schools with funding problems, like all New Jersey state schools that might eliminate their golf programs, like TCNJ just announced. (Rugters is dropping six men’s sports).

I think you might want to take a look at a current thread in the Parent’s Forum entitled ‘athletic recruiting’ and its focus is college golf. I posted some websites there that may be of some help to you and there are some other very helpful posts.

thank you! wow, we have work to do -NOW. also posted a response in the “athletic” thread. basic question- which LAC’s have very good golf programs? cannot find a ranking for schools in the past 3-5 years. we will get the PING guide.
