College Graduation Gift

Agree that debt free education was the big gift and both kids were very appreciative.

We did have a celebratory family dinner for all graduations (undergrad and masters degree).

For my S I purchased a school diploma frame for his undergrad degree but he deemed it to be “so large that it is obnoxious” and we returned it. After grad school we gave him a very nice watch that was his late grandfather’s – he wears it for special/dress occasions I think but not often. For D after undergrad I got her a cute very small brass statue of the school mascot (on a huge sale LOL) which she liked. After grad school I got her a nice bracelet which she still wears today.

We did buy our son a custom wooden American flag from this company to hang in his apartment. We customized it with an applied wooden logo of his university and an applied wooden logo of the rescue squad he volunteered with while at school. They do very impressive work. The also routinely offer 15%-20% off.

D19 graduated in May. She kept college costs within budget because of scholarships so no debt. We could handle the cost. We had gotten her a new car(Chevy Trax) in April 2020. Deals were around during the initial pandemic. And Mom didn’t like her driving her beater car so far from home to college. Also D23 was going to need a car and she got the beater. Well because D23 got a full ride we told D19 we would payoff the rest of the Trax. Also we paid for her new bed at her new apartment.

Don’t worry D23 didn’t get left out as she got my 3.5 year old Civic for college. And since D23 is 18 we took an extra nice trip to Mexico at Xmas a couple of weeks ago to an adults only resort.

So instead of paying for college right now we are paying off cars. But I am happy both will have solid cars for the first few years out of college and not have a car payment.
