College Help! Where to Apply?

I have great interest in continuing my education as. I was born in Gonaives, Haiti and I know English, French, Creole and I‘m learning Standard Mandarin. I’m a state ranked runner in Georgia and I love to write reviews for books the most recently being on Charles Dickens Great Expectations which was recently published in the hard copy of Teen Ink. I weekly help the Young Turks a radio and Internet talk show airing on Sirius Satellite Radio by sending videos which I think provides a healthy debate. I’m a summer volunteer and yearly tutor at McDonough Public Library and my dream job has always been to be a lawyer because I remember as a kid in third grade I thought being a lawyer would get me a big library with a vast amount of books. Some majors I’m interested in are Political Science, Pre-Law, Sociology, Int’l Studies, History. Basically a lot of Social Science.

I’ve already applied to Mercer, FSU, Tulane, GSU. I want one or two more preferably in the South region but I’m willing to look anywhere.

Thanks for the help!

If you’re really willing to look anywhere I would recommend you look at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities. The academics are really on the rise and their social sciences are already top notch and highly nationally ranked. Based on your GPA you would probably need highish test scores to get in (did you list them?) but it is definitly possible. Also, their OOS tuition is the lowest for any state school in the country by like 6 grand. All in all, it comes out around 25k a year. Worth a look for you I think.

Did you list your ACT or SAT scores? I’m not seeing them.

Is money no object?

Will you need financial aid? I know that you were born in Haiti, but are you a US resident now?

I’m a U.S Citizen.
30 ACT 36 on reading portion 12 on writing section
My families icome is under 40,000 dollars so I def. need fin. aid.

Rhodes might be a match for you. It’s in Memphis, TN, your stats are a match, it offers good finaid, and has very very good admission rates to law schools. There’s no pre-law major per se, but all of the other majors you listed are strong here. There’s also a specific pre-law advisor for students interested in that path. Because it’s in Memphis there are a lot of volunteer and internship opportunities that might match your interests.

I don’t know if I would get enough financial aid to Rhodes.
I don’t think they’re need blind also.
I love the small school, liberal arts feel though.

With an income under $40k, you’ll be needing a school that can provide 100% of your college costs with low/no loans. That’s going to be tough if you go OOS.

Ivies, and similar (such as Vandy) provides such aid, but I don’t think your ACT 30 (which is GOOD) is high enough. You could try Vandy if you are a URM. Vandy wants more URMs.

The problem is that since you’ll need complete aid, there aren’t many privates that can afford to give you the $50k you’ll need. OOS publics can’t meet need either for OOS students (UVa is an exception).

Your best bet will be your in-state Florida schools since you’ll qualify for federal aid, and Florida publics are CHEAP in cost. What about UMiami? It’s not public, but it might give merit and aid (don’t know how good they are with aid).

You’ve applied to FSU. What about the other Florida publics - such New College (it probably would give you merit to stack on your federal aid), FIU, USF? Wouldn’t some of them give you merit and aid?

Since you’re interested in law school (and will need big loans for that), it’s not important to take out big loans for undergrad (besides, your family might not qualify or want to co-sign those loans - no one is going to give a student a big loan without a co-signer.)

Remember, you’ll have to pay all those loans back and if you’ll need to borrow $150k+ for law school, your payments just from those loans will be almost $1800 a month. You’d have to be earning almost $200k per year to comfortably pay that back. It would take many years for a lawyer to be making that much money.

If you do well a decent undergrad school and score well on your LSAT, you’ll get into law school. :)

Thanks so much for the input!
So do you think even with a low GPA I should give it a shot at Vandy?
