To clarify, the biggest Duke scholarships (AB Duke, BN Duke, Robertson, Reginald Howard) are also “only” full tuition. :p

Maybe their textbooks and room and board and such were cheaper?

Or maybe they got a second scholarship that wasn’t full tuition but that would cover some of the other expenses

Meeting “full need” can include grants, loans, student summer work contribution, and work study. One package may meet need with fewer loans or or work study and more in the way of grants than another, even if the EFC is the same for both. A merit award result in a recalculation of the aid award. Often, however, Chicago will allow the merit award to replace the loans, work study, and student contribution.

Call me a heretic, but maybe he liked Duke better. ;)

Heretic!

:)

Wow… this isn’t discouraging at all…

Well, does anyone have stats on the type of students that get the partial scholarships? Maybe those are a little less depressing. :(

do you think they offered this kid’s scholarship to the next best applicant?

No. They offer scholarships to applicants, and some students take them, and some students don’t.

Here are some more scholarship winners. These aren’t quite as depressing.

The first one did have superb essays, if you read them. But I thought the second one was quite depressing.

man I could swear that I knew the kid that had those ridiculous stats… are you sure that he really went to Duke?
