College, how to make the most of it.

In high school I ended up finishing via a high school completion program. My two years at CC, from fall '08 to spring '10, my GPA was 2.65 with 35 credit hours. Since then I’ve radically changed, and through other activities I’ve developed a great work ethic. After this term, my GPA will be 3.0+ and I calculate that if I sustain and improve upon my current grades I’ll be at a 3.5 in 4 quarters.

I am working so hard now because I’ve finally found something I’m passionate about, science. I am most interested in Chemistry, but I too am seriously interested in Biology and Physics. I also am very athletic, so human biology and medicine are what I spend my time outside of school studying. I have recently realized the poor professional prospects of a chemistry PhD, and now I want to pursue a different post-undergraduate pathway. That’s when I found a combined MD/PhD program at OHSU ( I live in Oregon). I figure that I can do undergrad in Biochem and then transfer. I feel because I shot myself in the foot in the past, if I don’t get into that program, I need to have a back up plan.

Now that you know what’s on my mind, how do you feel that I can make the most out of my college education? I love science, but also want a career when I am done. I don’t care how much work or how long it takes.

I’m a mom, no longer a student, but what I get from your post is that you are passionate young guy with a really bright future ahead of you. You are so on your way, leave the past behind. If for nothing else, it seems you learned some very valuable life lessons along the way.
Take some time to join some team or clubs. Maybe date a little. Put even a small amount of money away for a rainy day and don’t forget to take a few minutes each day to smell the fresh air outside. Do some volunteer work, make sure it is with some group that helps the underperforming or underpriveledge. Maybe you can be a shining example to some high schooler who just doesn’t get it yet.
Most of all, pat yourself on your back, you sound like you’ve really got your stuff together!
