My daughter is a Junior with a steadily improving GPA. Unweighted it is a 3.0 now, 4.0 weighted. She had a poor freshman and sophomore year, but is averaging about a 3.8 this year with honors and AP courses. Received a 1420 on her SAT and 31 on ACT. We will definitely need financial assistance for school.

She prefers a liberal arts program in a warmish climate (we live in Las Vegas). Any suggestions for schools that would be good to consider?

What do you mean by “liberal arts program”? Almost all colleges/universities have a liberal arts program that would be found in their College of Arts & Sciences. What you may be referring to is a liberal arts college, which is a type of college where there are virtually no graduate students on campus.

Many universities ignore freshman year. Is her unwegiehd GPA 3.8 this year? What AP courses is she taking? What does she intend to major in? Does she have any career goals, even if only tentative?

5Girls, some to possibly look at that are supposed to be not only good schools, but good with aid are: Tulane, Hendrix (Arkansas), Trinity (TX), Stetson(Fl) and Wofford (SC). Best of luck!

Austin College (TX)
Southwestern University (TX) (More like a liberal arts college than a big University)
Lyon College (AK)
Truman State (MO)(Public liberal arts college in Missouri)

Without knowing more of her needs and wants, this list along with poi’s list is at least a place to start investigating.

Also, I would check out Loren Pope’s book, Colleges That Change Lives for additional ideas.

I assume the 1420 is out of 1600? If so, the Claremont Colleges in So. Cal may offer some options regardless of the freshman year. Also Occidental and Univ. of Redlands in about the same area.

Her SAT scores are 800 verbal, 640 math and 700 writing. She’s going to take them again in June to try to improve the math and writing.

Her junior year classes (this year) were AP World History and AP French and honors chemistry, trig/pre-calc and American lit. I think she’ll have a 3.7 something for this year (unweighted).

Next year she’d registered for AP Calculus, AP Studio Art (Photography), AP US Gov’t and AP English Lit as well as Honors Anatomy/Phys, International Relations and psychology.

I forgot to add her interests, which are international studies, psychology, literature. An avid reader and interested in St. Johns, but don’t know if this will work for us in terms of finances.

My daughter is going to Pitzer next year - 2170 SAT and 3.96 u gpa. Pitzer is SAT/ACT optional if you are in the top 10% of your class and/or have over a 3.5 gpa. Definitely worth looking into…
