College Interest Essays

How long are yours? Because they don’t really specify on the application.

I wrote one for hotel administation(primary) and one for CALS(Alternate). Both were just under 500 words.

Mine was exactly 570 words. I think they do specify that they want them at or below 500 words, but clearly it doesn’t matter.

Alright thanks. I’m really not looking forward to writing these.

It may not be fun, but this is your chance to shine. I want to major in either restaurant management at SHA or food science at CALS. I used my essays to make sure that they will see my passion for both hospitality and food. I don’t have the best SAT, so i hope that my essay will make up for mediocre test scores.

Hehe, I feel almost embarrassed to talk about my essay, and it’s not due to the quality of the essay but rather the length. I was rather naive when I submitted my first application. I had read on common app that a minimum of 250 words were required. I had taken that to mean that there is no limitation on how long the essays could be…

If you haven’t guessed it by now, my problem arose from the fact that I had submitted an incredibly lengthy essay - 2500 words in total.

So the moral of the story is - don’t write an incredibly wordy essay as I have done. It will almost definitely destroy your chances of admission. Keep it to at most 700 or 800 words.

Interestingly enough however, I was accepted into the college that I had submitted this monster to.(Cornell)
