College Laptop?

This is probably the MOST frequently asked question but laptop or desktop?
I’ll be majoring biomedical engineering.
I don’t particularly need the laptop for note taking because I take better notes by hand and I like to record lectures on my phone
I’m a PC gamer, so the desktop performance is a pretty big sacrifice personally.
I’m mostly worried about awkwardly being the only person in a group project without a laptop and because I’m pretty much nocturnal, bothering my roommate’s sleep with the desktop since a laptop can be simply taken to a common room or a library.
Also are laptops allowed in library? I’d imagine someone getting ****ed off about the typing and clicking noise?
Finally, do dorm rooms typically have enough room for dual monitors?

Laptops are definitely allowed in the library, at least in mone

You could consider a desktop/netbook (or even tablet) combo. That way you can have the power of a desktop when you are in your room, but you can get a cheaper netbook/tablet or even just a cheap laptop if you need something to take with you to the library or when you travel or something. I know a lot of people who have this set up and it works fine for them.

I wouldn’t worry about not having a laptop in a group project because it really doesn’t matter if you have a laptop or not, and in most of my groups when I was in school, only one or two people brought laptops to meetings. Don’t worry about it. No one will care if you have a laptop or not.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the roommate issue, since I’m sure you guys could work something out. Just let them know at the beginning of the year, and try to work out something if they think it’s going to be a problem. Maybe if your school has roommate matching forms before you’re assigned a roommate, you can make sure to note that you like to stay up late.

I’ve never heard of a library that didn’t allow laptops. Sometimes there are quiet areas in libraries, but even then, that usually refers to talking, not laptops.

Whether or not you’ll have enough room, depends on your school and dorm. You’ll have to see how big the desks are. My desk when I lived in a dorm had enough room for two monitors, but you’ll have to check with your school.
