Are there other colleges like Brown where their
acedemics and activities are ran by “freedom and choice”
I heard Brown, even though it is a very competitve school,’
it is actually loose and students are granted with lots of freedom.
I was wondering if there are other colleges that are fairly hard to get in
but very free like Brown…

A few schools that are often said to be like Brown are Wesleyan, Vassar, Oberlin and Macalester. If you’re female and interested in all-women’s colleges, Smith is also quite similar.

If you’re looking for academic freedom, look for schools where a lot of students (relative to none, I guess) create their own major. Also, as most schools do have distribution requirements, look for schools where you can apply upper division courses to those distributions, and where prerequisites are easily overridden, and this works especially well if you’re allowed to use pass/fail outside your major.

Sorry, I don’t actually know of any schools but Brown like that, but if anyone reads my description and something pops up, please post.

In my earlier post I listed schools that are like Brown more socially than academically.

If you’re looking for schools with open curriculums like Brown’s, your options are Amherst, Grinnell, Smith, and a few others. There are only a handful that are completely open academically.
