College list for Major in Bioinformatics

My daughter was all for EECS but after doing research in Bioinformatics during the junior year and now got an internship in a Bioinformatics lab over the summer; so she would like to explore options for doing major in Bio informatics at the undergrad level which will mean major in Computer Science with Genetics or Health Science etc instead of Computer Science with Electrical Engineering.
Does it fall under Biomedical Engineering?

I think Biomedical Engineering and Bioinformatics are different. Biomedical Engineering does not need much Computer Science.

[Biomedical engineering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Biomedical engineering - Wikipedia)

[Bioinformatics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Bioinformatics - Wikipedia)

Bioinformatics is a branch of computer science. It definitely does not fall under engineering.

I think Bioinformatics is really a grad-level major. I know a few Ph.D. level folks in this field and they all majored in CS in undergrad. And Rice has a strong CS program and great opportunities to perform research in bioinformatics with some professors/clinicians at Texas Medical Center facilities (the largest medical complex in the world right next door to campus with over 13 hospitals and 2 med schools).

MidwestMom – many universities have CS as part of their engineering school.

I would check out the biometry and statistics program in the Life Sciences college at Cornell. Your daughter has very good numbers, and Cornell offers a very nice interdisciplinary environment. She could, for instance, double major in biometry and biological engineering, or biometry and biology, or biometry and information science.

[Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering](http://www.bee.cornell.edu/)

[Cornell Information Science](http://www.infosci.cornell.edu/ugrad/index.html)

I would also check out Carnegie Mellon and the University of Rochester. SUNY Buffalo and RPI also offer good programs.

It’s not quite that way. It depends on each college. At UCSD, the major belongs to Bioengineering Department. Bioinformatics involves more with computation and discovery. Probably it’s easier to differentiate the two majors by looking at the course catalog of both undergraduate and graduate programs:

When I was searching for schools with undergrad programs in “bioinformatics” I did notice that there were schools with majors knkown as biometrics, biostatistics, biomathematics. You may not be confined to schools that have a specific major called “bioinformatics”. You might be able to get the same education under a major with a different name. Worth looking into if it opens up more possibilities.

There are probably better schools than those that she can get into that has a program she wants…

Thanks for all the replies.
How about Duke, JHU, U chicago and Northwestern? Any of these offering good program in Bioinformatics.

This is her updated list
MIT (Best CS as per school seniors)
Stanford (Her top choice)
Princeton (Her research teacher recommendation)
Harvard (my, her mom’s, dream)
Caltech
Yale (it was her dream prior to narrowing the major to EECS)
UCB
CMU
Columbia Fu (Recommended by Dad)
U. Penn (School’s Favorite Ivy)
Cornell (Recommended by School College counseling)
Brown (computer science) (Will Apply for PLME)
JHU
Duke
Northwestern (Will apply for HPME)
University of Chicago (Computer Science) (Another School College Counseling)
UCLA
UCSD (Will apply for direct medicine)
USC (Will apply for direct medicine)

If Yale was her dream then let her apply there. There is plenty of bioinformatics she can do there.
