College list (Please Help) [MA resident, 3.73 GPA, 1420 SAT, finance]

Thank you for this response. I have heard good things about UMinnesota especially for consulting. I am really considering Richmond and Lehigh. I will take a look at all of these schools. I will definetily factor in any merit I get and the coa of each school once I get results.

We will have to agree to disagree, Kelley is auto admit for those who meet the various criteria. Perhaps that person didn’t apply by Nov 1 or their GPA wasn’t on their transcript or they attended two HSs. You can PM me if you want so we don’t clog this thread.

I have never heard of Santa Clara. Its location looks pretty solid. I will definitely check it out!

Not that this particularly matters, but in my circles Santa Clara is a sort of “rising” college possibility because it does have a very nice package of attributes. Strong undergraduate-focused education, great location, lots of well-positioned alums, all the sorts of stuff lots of kids are looking for. And while it is getting more competitive for admissions, it has a reputation in my circles of being a fairly predictable admit for students with the right numbers (or better).

The main “catch” is it is expensive full pay. But, it does offer some merit. So, sometimes people who are interested in the upside take a shot and see how it compares financially to other options. Or sometimes they just pay! Because if you can comfortably afford it, I think it tends to deliver what it promises.

in my “circles” (urban, Northeast) Santa Clara “rose” about 15 years ago. Like Holy Cross, Fordham, Missouri S&T, Beloit, and several others, its admissions statistics and yield in no way reflect the rigor of the education and the quality of the faculty. Santa Clara is a really fine institution!

We’re local Bay Area so maybe more aware of SCU, but it’s definitely very well-regarded.

That makes sense because where I am, not a lot of kids are necessarily looking at many California schools, so we might be a little late to a party that is happening out there. But I think the dynamic post-COVID has really led to more kids think more broadly, and that results in the “discovery” of excellent options that other people knew about long before.

Just wanted to confirm that my son had similar stats with OP. Applied EA and was admitted to IU and direct admit to Kelley.

Our son is a sophomore at BC in the business school. Here’s my advice:

If BC is your dream school and your parent’s are all in on the cost, I’d suggest taking the SAT again and hiring a private tutor to prep. Your score is great, be proud of it, but the BC data from this round of admissions is nuts! Target a 1500. BC likes SAT/ACT scores–for the business school especially.

As a MA student, there is a ton of competition for BC. We know some students who applied to BC as an Econ major which is not in the business school because the acceptance rate is slightly higher. You could then minor in Finance, but don’t expect to be able to transfer into the business school once at BC. Nearly impossible. If this would not be okay with you, then obviously don’t do it, but if you are in love with BC, that’s one small way to improve your odds.

Are you a junior? If there is any way to go to one of the summer programs at BC THIS summer, look into it. Ever to Excel is one. It’s a way to show you love it there, make some connections and possibly get a rec letter from a prof or current student who you meet in the program. If it’s too late to get into these BC summer programs, what are you doing this summer that would connect to your future plans, your application, help your community etc?

Find a back up that you like! Maybe Nova, UM, Indiana, Umass Isenberg, Lehigh. These are all schools with strong business programs that we’ve seen kids pivot to if it doesn’t work out getting into BC. Lots of great options!

Good luck!! BC is a wonderful school, but so are many other colleges and universities.

Thank you for the comment!

Great list and Kelley is a great safety!

My DC had very similar coursework and stats, higher math SAT and many more volunteer hrs, at NE private school. Denied ED1 at Carroll- the business program acceptance rate is way below the 30ish% ED1 acceptance rate. BU had a totally different vibe than BC so did not apply. Was accepted ED2 at Villanova for business so withdrew other apps. Kelley was also a safety and did DA visit days, but it was too big a program. WF, Nova, Richmond, and BC really love ED, especially ED1- visit them all if you can. I think BC ED1 will be a high reach, so have a strong ED2 app (which will include first semester grades).

Best of luck!

Do you know how often they change the direct admit criteria, or how big the changes are?

I don’t know the history of the direct admit criteria changes. I do know that IU AOs have been saying for several cycles that IU Kelley was going to increase the direct admit criteria, but obviously that hasn’t happened yet.

Based on your profile, interests and goals, I recommend Richmond.
