Throughtout this first year I learned a lot of things that will help me and ideas I have come across and I would like to share them. Maybe we can add to it and have this become a big list

Get amazon prime

Use command hooks for everything!! You can post 2 on the wall and use them to hang your tablet and bam, a tv!

Use a planner and keep your syllabi

Plan library time

Keep pasta, and soup in your room for bad weather days

^Second keeping food in your room for bad weather days.

Check the weather before you go out so you don’t have to make a trek back to your dorm for a coat / rain gear.

Avoid putting off work to nights, especially getting close to the weekend; that’s when people like to socialize and unless you are extremely disciplined / isolate yourself, you won’t get much done.

Check and see if the textbook is heavily used, then check and see if you can use previous edition / International Edition, then try and buy from a student for cheap / rent it off the Internet. BUY only as a last resort or if you’ll need it for multiple semesters. DOUBLE LAST RESORT = Buy from bookstore.

Start tapering off social media use / 2048, Flappy Bird, etc. addictions or the struggle will be real…

When you get to a major exam and realize that you are WAY behind on studying, triage. Focus more on what you don’t know and practice what you do know last. Alternatively, focus more on what will be asked most on the test.

You’ll learn which pretty quickly which classes you will / won’t be tempted to skip (early, boring, easy, elective vs. required, attendance not checked, etc.). Don’t skip a class that has material you don’t understand when reading on your own. Don’t skip a class where notes / Power Points / lectures aren’t posted somewhere. Don’t skip a small class or a class where professors are known to give exams that have information from lectures (some teachers say more than what is on the notes). Don’t make skipping a habit if you can’t be disciplined enough to study independently and consistently.

Sleep. It’s precious. Sleep deprivation will make you irritable, it will make you eat more, and it will hurt your ability to concentrate. It will hurt to tear yourself away from your friends’ conversations, but at least for me, all my friends could and would stay up all night talking, and I never regretted leaving them before my 9 AMs.

Go to office hours if you can. Even if you know the material. Professors think very highly of students who go to office hours, and you will gain a good relationship and some teacher’s pet perks (such as homework extensions, pushing back a test for some important reason, personal advice on how to ace the exams) if you can push through the commitment and initial awkwardness of office hours.
