College of "___" or Normal University?

I mean… should I go to a normal university that offers all majors or go to a College of Arts?

I wanted to study arts and design, but should I go to the college of art or a normal university?

What difference will it make?

I’m going more towards going to a normal one first then go get my specialization at some college of arts. But maybe doing this I’m wasting time instead of going directly to what I want.

HELP!

I’d recommend going with the true university. There is a good chance you could change your mind about your intended career, and the university would give you the option to pursue something new…

If you change your mind about studying art, you’ll find more opportunities at any university.

If you can find a university or college that has a really strong arts & design undergraduate program–the kind that future professionals might choose, not dabblers–then you could have it both ways: get the in-depth art/design study you want, and have a backup in case you change your mind. If you get a general degree first, you are looking at having to go for an MFA or the like in order to fully explore the art scene. That could be an expensive proposition, it’s difficult to get in to a good program, AND you would likely be “behind” the other students in terms of your development as an artist/designer. (I know art isn’t a linear progression, but there is an issue of how much time you have put into exploring and refining, and the quality of instruction while doing so.)

The question is, what exactly do you mean by “arts and design”–painting?, graphic arts?, sculpture?, industrial design?, fabric design?–and what university has a program that will suit you.

Agreed. There is no downside to a school that has both a strong arts program and many other opportunities as well.

I agree that a college or university with a strong art program would be your best bet. It would give you the option to change your mind about your major if you wanted to as well as give you the opportunity to minor or double major in another area of interest if you so desired. My son is a graphic design major at a university that has a very well reputed art department and he likes the opportunity to take classes in other areas that interest him and also to socialize with people of varied interests and majors.

If you are serious, go to an art school or a conservatory…your training will be top notch…A regular university will not fit these needs nearly as well
