College of art-any international studies major

I am international student and admitted to college of art -undeclared major, not honour college for U. of Pittsburgh(25000per year) and binghamton(17000 per year).Ohio State U and Minnesota-twin cities are waiting for result. I am interested in international studies(NOT political science), humanities, languages subject. So confused and appreciate all your advise. Thanks sooooooooo much!

just learn that the BPil IAS (international studies) is very vigorous program and require specific requirement in order to study(3.5GPA). Any more information from current guys who study? please help.

Hey pf5, you and I have similar interests and I also applied to Pitt and U Minn. I’m not sure exactly what international field you’re looking into, but Minnesota has a major called Biology, Society and Environment that basically leads to Public Health/Global Health.
If you’re looking more for the core international studies curriculum, U Minn. also has some area studies, but not a lot. One benefit of U Minn. is that Minneapolis has a huge immigrant population (especially Hmong and Somali people), so the University really reaches out to those communities.
As for Pitt, I’ve been wondering the same thing. The closest major I have found to international studies is called Urban Studies, and you can take it with an international focus (again, I’m leaning more towards the global health side, so you’d have to tailor this advice to your own preferences). There is a Global Studies Certificate that you can take in conjunction with another major, and looks less intense than the BPhil in International and Area Studies. There are also concentrations in various areas (Africa, East Asia, etc.), but again, these aren’t majors. Both of these options can be found at the bottom of this page: [Majors, Minors, and Certificates](http://www.asundergrad.pitt.edu/advising/majors-minors.html). Depending on your interests, you could also look into Anthropology or Sociology, both of which I’ve heard are popular majors at Pitt.
At either Pitt or Minn. (I don’t know about your other two), you can definitely take foreign languages and have them count towards a major.
You will probably get into U Minn. if you got into Pitt; personally I am choosing Pitt, but I’m sure you’ll be happy wherever you end up. Let me know if you find any more information about this! :)

Pitt’s [Center for International Studies](http://www.ucis.pitt.edu/) is set up to so that you can turn any major university-wide into one with an international focus. The only specific undergrad program for international studies is the BPhil one through the honors college. But you could major in languages, sociology, history, art…and combine it with the International Studies program.

Pitt has multiple centers within its Center for International Studies that are designated by the US as national resource centers (like Latin American Studies & Russia/Eastern Europe), as well as one of ten European Union designated Centers of Excellence and Chinese designated Confucius Center. It has a lot going on in the area.

Thanks all. I apply Minnesota also because it has really cheaper tuition fee and college of art looks also good? But still no news received. I am interested in cultural, language, history aspect, not in politically or healthy aspect.

Now I think major in anthropology or language with certificate in international studies would be my another alternative if i pick Pitt at last.

Hi maddyk, why you prefer pitt than Minnesota? I am international student, cost is one of the main concern. I really want to pursue a college worth and fit to me.

I narrrow down the decisions to pitts, ohio state and minnesota. Pitt is about 5000 per year more than the other 2 schools. If the honour program for international studies is too rigorous for me, I may choose humanities, lanugages, area studies or other art college stuff, then how to compare these 3 schools in terms of college of art’s ranking nationally, research or extracurrcular opportunity, do I worth to pay more to Pitt?

I prefer to go back to my country for future career, where only ivies or top 20 are well-known)Thanks for more advise.

updated, rejected by U. of Minnesota as expected because I applied after their priority deadline. So now have to choose between Pitts and Ohio Stat U, please give views on their college of art. There is much information concerning their science/health/business/pre-med. information, but less concerning art program. Please help, thanks.

Neither school has a college of art. Do you mean Arts & Sciences? Both Pitt and OSU are great schools and you can’t go wrong either way.

yes, it is college of art and science. I won’t choose science majors, so just short as college of art. One thing i know is Pitt is strong in Philosophy.Requested more information about their art and humanities program, please.

still waiting…please.Time for deposit is nearly due.

Every department is different, but overall Pitt will be strong in most if not all of them at the undergraduate level. Humanities would include majors in English, History, Foreign Language, Communications, Art History, and Philosophy. Without knowing your major, it is hard to get more information. Of course most students do not choose their major until sophomore year, so this is not a problem. Rest assured that you will get a great education at Pitt in any major if you apply yourself and choose your courses wisely.
