How will the new college affect admissions for data science? I signed up as a data science major for c’o 2028. Are the admit rates going to mirror that of L&S’s historical rates?
The admit rate for DS has been slowly decreasing the last few years with numbers around 8%. Data Science has been a High Demand major since the UCB designated this new admission category in 2022. Only time will tell.
CCDSS contains only three formerly L&S majors, which are CS, data science, and statistics.
Of these, only statistics is not a high demand major, and it is the smallest major.
In contrast, L&S has mostly majors which are not high demand majors, including some very large ones like MCB, IB, political science, sociology, etc…
So expect admission rates to CCDSS to be lower than for L&S. But the new L&S admission policy where students wanting a high demand major must designate it on the application means that admission selectivity will vary by major within L&S.
Last year, DS admit rates were in the 8%-10% range. There has been a massive slowdown in the tech sector so this year’s admit rates may be on the higher end of this range.
