College of Engineering Chances and thoughts

I’m 30 y/o been in school on and off. I started really bad and was recently diag w adhd. For the past year I’ve only got A’s. I only have core classes left to do. I completed only Calc 1 and Chem1. In calculus 1, I got an A. In chemistry I got an F in 2003, the following year I worked hard and got an A. Math, Physics, and Programming are easy for me. I usually get the best score in the class. English on the other hand, I struggle with. Every semester I spent in school I’ve worked except this year when I told myself. I have a problem. This summer I went to the psych and proved my innatention problem. At one point my GPA was 1.68 with 53 credit attempts. Right now is 3.45.

My highschool was one of the most violent ones in NYC. It has been closed now. I didn’t attend any classes because I was always tired and sleeping, it wasn’t like if I had a social life like a typical NYC teen. I now see how my disability affected my whole life. When I was in elementry school I opened the workbook for arithmetic and fell asleep on it. That’s why my mental arithmetic isn’t too good, but I’m improving it greatly. When I was in middle school I got 99 percentile once or twice in the citywide math test. That was the standardized math test for NYC. Back in 92, 93. When I took the entrance exam for bronx hs of sci, I fell asleep while taking it. Even after getting full nights rest and eating breakfast like they told me too, a lot of times. I even felt weird in there, I wasn’t used to such diversity. Asians, Indians, and whites. I’ve never seen that when I was 12. I’m Dominican/Salvadorian. All I’ve seen before was Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and Blacks kids throughout my academic career until that point.

If given adequate time, due to my slow processing mind, I ussually score 94-100 on exams. I believe, I’m very good with logic, rational thinking, and analyzing. In programming class, my programs are far more effecient and better than any other student. Not that it means much because I’m in a community college and others aren’t into thinking or anything.

The major I’m pursuing is Computer Engineering(Hardware). Maybe OR.

My career goal is to work with stocks or money. I’m planning to get a masters in Financial Engineering, or Finance Mathematics.

I know I will get into UF for sure because of 2+2, and my school also has an articulation agreement with Georgia Tech.

What are my chances at this college? Is it even worth going here, over my two other choices?

I appreciate any input, good or bad. Even ones irrelevent to my two questions.

Irrelevent is spelled irrelevant. If you make careless mistakes like this after college, it could ruin you.

I have seen adult students in several of my engineering classes who have come back to get Bachelor’s degrees.

Cornell is usually extremely accepting and understanding of alternate education paths and I believe you should try applying to Cornell. Given your extenuating circumstances I think Cornell would give you a good hard look.

Thanks youu both for your input. Including, Mr 4 posts. I really don’t care about writing. It’s not my forte. I do care about my spelling and grammer since that is more subjective. Thanks for your advice chendrix. What is your opinion on Cornell vs GT and UF in Engineering undergrad for someone that wants to be in the financial field. I know GT is ranked #1 in IR/OR, but I rather do CompEng. Just in case something happens in my life and I have to stop there. A Hardware engineer in whiteplains can make 100k, an operations manager will most likely make 50k+. This is a forum, that’s why I’m not spell checking.

Well I’m from south florida and UF is my family’s alma mater
I agree they are both amazing schools, but UF and GTs appeal is mainly in the south.

Cornell is widely respected and recognized both in the Northeast and the Midwest.
We also have one of the best computer science programs in the nation and one of the oldest and strongest electrical & computer engineering programs; it is a fantastic mix of theoretical and practical.

You can easily get into the financial field using anything that hones your analytical skills. Yes OR/IR can do this, but I do think you might have an advantage with CompEng because of your familiarity with complex programming (which can be a real help in banking/finance).

All three are wonderful schools. I don’t know your financial situations, but you might also need to take that into account; UF provides a lot of scholarships for in-state students.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot, I’ll strongly consider UF. Since they proposed the - system in their grading there was an uproar. But now that is in effect they introduced <90 = a , a- b+ and b are from 80-90 with points being 3.6, 3.3, and 3.0 It has an amazing advantage for a student, especially those that hover with grades from 85-100. Those who had 85, 86 consistently would be at a disadvantage, but w/e.
What I’m trying to say is that it will be easier to get A’s since you don’t need the typical 94+. This system is only a suggestion and is on a teacher to teacher bases, but it’s their. And I think I will have a high GPA under this system that may be attractive. From UF you don’t think it would be any problem getting into Baruch, Columbia, Cornell, NYU, etc.?

I worked the math and since I entered school again last year, my GPA has been 3.9 for 35 credits. Again, I tried harder, and wasn’t working.

I know I’m an underrepresented minority. Although there are many Dominicans in college, the typical stereo type of my people are sell drugs, drive bmws(cash), drive lincoln cabs, chill in the corner, and running bodegas. I don’t know how helpful is that for scholarships

If you can prove your track record at UF then you will definitely be in good standing for top schools.

And there is a lot of scholarship money out there for hispanics and also for non-traditional students.
Try searching on the web for scholarship opportunities, and possibly call the financial aid offices of the schools you are interested in. Explain your situation and ask them what sort of support you can reasonably expect if you were admitted.

um chendrix, dominicans are black

umm, Feral24, hispanic is an ethnicity, black or white is a race.

You can be a:
White hispanic
White non-hispanic
Black hispanic
Black non-hispanic.

Dominicans, as part of the former Spanish empire, are hispanic.

Feral, I’m from the Dominican Republic, not Dominica. You know like Albert Pujols, A-rod, P. Martinez…
