College Professor vs. Accounting/Finance

I’m doing a ton of research right now to see what would be a good career choice for me. Almost all articles say that being a college professor is a bad idea because I’ll mostly end up being an adjunct faculty member and there is really no job demand for professors, but it is really rewarding (if you end up in the tenure track). And if I end up getting a PhD in Chemistry and decide not to become a professor, it is going to be extremely hard to get hired anywhere else besides academia. I also did some research and they all say that accounting or finance is in high demand right now. I wouldn’t mind doing calculations all day, but this reminds me of pharmacy (standing all day in front of a computer checking medications and entering info into a computer; I wanted to be a pharmacist for the money, but not anymore since I’m working right now as a pharmacy technician and I observe the pharmacist all day, screw that job!!!). Pharmacy would bore me to death. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher since I was little, but now that I’m older I understand the struggles of being a teacher and there is absolutely no job demand for that (and I don’t want to teach elementary/middle school/high school). I really don’t want to suffer in the future, I know I need to do something that I love, but sometimes we have to think about the money as well. Like I know I’m going to take out loans in the future (I’m in community college right now so I don’t have to take out any loans at the moment, but when I transfer, my parents are going to make me take them out). Is accounting/finance a super boring job? I know you sit 8-9 hours calculating your day away (?), but I would die of boredom. If I did end up becoming an accountant I would definitely become a CPA. My family members are half teachers and half in business. There’s nothing else that interests me besides math and science. I actually enjoyed math in high school because I actually got my act together my senior year since I wanted to get good grades and got some of the best grades in the class. I need opinions about what you think is a good idea. I know that I myself at the end have to choose and no one can tell me what to do but me, but I just want to hear your opinions about what you think is better and why? Thanks!

My understanding is that it’s tough to get work in academia - too many PhDs, too few tenure track jobs.

But I’m going to make a suggestion you might like to think about. There are a few areas where there is a shortage of PhDs and a good job market, and that is accounting, which you’re thinking about as your plan B. What about possibly becoming an accounting professor? You’d need to get a PhD in accounting first, but it’s one of the brighter prospects in the academic world.
