College questions

I will be a junior this coming school year. I have a 4.0 weighted and unweighted GPA and am in the top 10 in my class. When I took the PSAT I scored a little bit above a 1600 (1630-1650ish). I am not extremely involved in school or my community. I write for my school’s newspaper and will continue to do so for the duration of high school. I have been in honors classes Freshman and Sophomore year and am planning to take 2 of the 3 AP courses offered this coming year. I contribute to several notable online publications. I am involved with an ambassador program at my school and am a member in several clubs around school. This summer I am taking an online course in writing for an Ivy League. I hope to be involved in journalism and gender studies come college, but I am equally as interested in art history; regardless, I hope to write about these topics.

I have several inquiries involving the latter information:

Would it be beneficial to do any SAT prep or is my score fine as is?

Will my lack of extracurriculars hurt me in the college admission process?

Are schools like USC, UCLA or Scripps college out of my league or would it be more realistic to consider schools like Pepperdine, LMU, Mount Saint Mary’s, etc?

Lastly, what would be the chances that I would get into a college like NYU or Barnard? I am planning to attend a college with a strong liberal arts program.

Thank you!

Edit: I also go to a private high school, if that makes a difference

No offense, but your score is atrocious… Never heard of LMU or MSM’s, but you have no chance at the other schools with a 1650, sorry.
Kind of a shame, as your application’s not bad, otherwise.

Get your SAT score up to 1800, then write great essays… Then you’ll be in the league for Pepperdine, at least.

By the way, I wouldn’t mind reading over your essays when the time comes.

Best of luck!

Work on that score. It seems like you’re only an upcoming junior, so you still have time. Definitely study for the standardized testing, and consider taking the ACT. I found it much easier than the SAT.

Your ECs sound fine, but perhaps you might want to get a leadership position in there somewhere or start volunteering if you have the time.

I also would love to edit your essay when you need it edited. I’ll be attending Scripps in the fall.

Good luck!

Are your honors classes not weighted? If they are, your W/UW GPA should differ slightly…unfortunately if your SAT stays the same as your PSAT it is definitely too low for almost all of those schools and the difference between SAT and GPA will be questioned. Perhaps speak to a college counselor?
