College Range

Ok, first and foremost, this is half/half a chance me thread. I’m looking to help settle down the stress i’m having about colleges even though i’m only a sophomore. Could you guys please just say if what colleges i put down are in my range and any other colleges i should consider looking at. I need to end this big stress factor i’ve been having for months even though i don’t even start visiting these colleges until next year. Thanks guys.

Gender- white jewish male
YOG-2015

Rigor-basically all upper-non honors courses are honors anywhere else
Wilton High School - #365 in US (US News and World Report)
Every year around 5-10 people go to ivies and top third go to excellent colleges (Exs: Tufts, Duke, etc.) but my grade is a bit smarter than previous years
Basically anyone who takes all honors from freshman year is a genius and is guaranteed to go to a great school

PSAT (sophomore year) - 169 (i know its bad, i just took to see what the SAT would be like, did not study at all)

Freshman year
All upper-non honor classes - gpa 3.8

Sophomore year (so far)
All upper-non honor classes and accelerated science (currently chemistry) - gpa 3.8

Junior year
AP macroeconomics/Asian studies
Honors english
Honors spanish (no honors spanish previous to this)
Non-honors Analysis (combination of advanced alg., trig. and precalc) - honors analysis is considered the hardest class in the school even more so than AP Calc BC and AP Physics
Non-honors physics (most kids dont take physics at all)

Senior Year
AP US Gov
AP Bio
Half year higher honors english/ half year AP level english (English courses are weird in my school)
AP Spanish
Regular precalculus

Although it may seem like im a english/soc studies student, i actually love math and science it’s just my school has a very difficult math/science programs and i just missed out in being in honors tracks for these subjects

Extra Curriculars
2 year JV hockey/2 year varsity hockey
1 year JV tennis/3 year varsity tennis
Hebrew school aid since 8th grade (paying job)
President of temple youth group (what i will be)-only soph. who commits to youth group - includes around 50 hours of community service by end of senior year
President of garden club (what i will be)-only soph. who is in garden club - sort of community service and club (grows food for school cafeteria and local food shelters) around 100 hours by end of senior year
Cello since 4th grade-probably will be first cello senior year because i am tied for if not the best cello player in orchestra

Went on 3 week trip to Yellowstone to help maintain and fix hiking trails on national park-80 hours communiuty service

Ok, now the fun part. Below is a list of the colleges im currently interested in and or researching. Please comment on what other schools i could add to look at as well as my current chances of getting into the schools. Also i’ll include what i think the school type is doe me and you can comment if you agree or disagree. Only include schools in northeast, south and midwest. So basically the farthest i’d willing to go is a 24 hour car ride or less from Connecticut. Also NO HUGE schools (i.e. state schools) Finally NO liberal arts schools w/out engineering. Thank you all!

Tufts-reach (Dad and uncle went there)
Clark-safety (mom went there)
Johns Hopkins-fit
Vanderbilt-fit
Washington U St. Louis-mid reach
Carnegie Mellon-fit
RPI-safety
Union-safety
Dartomouth-reach
Georgetown-fit
Brown-reach
UPenn-reach
Northwestern-reach

You definitely need an SAT score of 2100+ in order to have a good shot at most of those schools. Assuming you do get such a score,

Tufts is a high match
JHU is a reach
Vandy is a high match
CMU is a high match

What about non-huge state schools, like South Dakota School of Mines and Technology or Missouri University of Science and Technology?

Dartmouth’s ABET-accredited engineering degree programs are more than 4 years.

If your PSAT score predicts your SAT score, then you may have a harder time with admissions that you predict.

My PSAT score does not reflect what my SAT score will be at all. It was merely a trial to see where i stand for my baseline score for the test. I did not study at all and for the real SAT i will definitely do so. I’m guessing my scores will be mid 700 for math, and high 600-low 700 for for both critical reading and writing.

ucbalumnus-I don’t necessarily want to go into engineering, although it does interest me a lot. What i really want, is to go to a school with a lot of options for degrees so i can really get to know what ill like so i will be ready for a real job after i graduate

BuBBLES FoR SALE-i’ve seen this a lot and not really sure what it means
What is “high” in high match. Does it mean this is is a perfect fit or is it in between match and reach?

you should be looking at schools like
u of pittsburgh
butler university
university of hartford
university of evansville

So what are your criteria? Location, urban or not, potential majors,Greek life, sports culture?
If you are unsure of engineering or science then RPI is not a good choice, though they also have business. It is very STEM-oriented.
CMU - which college would you apply to? I think of CMU engineering and CS as reaches for everyone.
Tufts - if your GPA stays up and your scores are roughly equivalent, being a legacy might help. The acceptance rate this coming year will be under 20%.
You will know better what your target schools are once you have real test scores to work with.
Invest in a Fiske Guide and start browsing.
Don’t stress too much as a sophomore. Start visiting local colleges of varying types so you get a good idea of what you are looking for. If you are only considering schools that have engineering it will automatically help narrow your list. Georgetown does not have engineering.
If you like Union, consider Bucknell and Lafayette.
